Bespoke Post CHOP Box Review & Coupon – August 2016

Bespoke Post is a men’s lifestyle subscription box, and it remains the premier choice for high quality, sophisticated accessories, gear, and curated interest kits for hobbyists and Renaissance men. The theme for this box is CHOP.  Bespoke had several cool new offerings this month, so I actually grabbed a couple of them — my other selection was OVER EASY.

The front side introduced the two incredible tools in the CHOP curation, A Chinese cleaver, and an ulu knife.

The reverse side of the card always has the beginning of a useful article on some point of mastery related to the curation.  This edition discussed simple ways to improve the quality of your meals without enrolling in culinary school.  The remainder of the article is available online at Bespoke.

There’s also an information card provided by the manufacturer.  Both knives are manufactured right in Massachusetts by Lamson, a company with two centuries of experience (that is a lot for a U.S. company).  Each blade is made of high-carbon stainless steel — the high carbon content makes a stronger blade, but it also means their is less of the alloying materials that create the stainless character, so proper care is recommended.

Lamson Chinese Vegetable Cleaver ($52.50):  The cleaver is large, but not comically so.  Though termed a vegetable cleaver, the knife is extremely versatile.  Anyone with doubts should look up some clips of Martin Yan (from the PBS cooking series, “Yan Can Cook”) to see how lightning-fast food prep can be with a skillfully wielded cleaver.

The edge arrived sealed by a coating of protective wax.

The balance of the blade makes it feel light in the hand, but the heft is substantial enough to tap through vegetables with ease.

Note from Brandy: I unboxed this one and I was SUPER surprised how amazingly light this knife is!! Tom has a thing for kitchen knives and I don’t use most of them because they’re so heavy – this one was just like a feather.

Lamson Ulu Knife ($27.30):  The ulu knife is based on a traditional Inuit knife.  Though likely originating primarily as a deftly maneuverable skinning and butchering knife, it also is deadly-effective in the modern kitchen as a rocking, all-purpose blade, similar to a mezzaluna.  The blade makes short work of any slicing task.  Also, if your kitchen work surface is slightly shorter than you would prefer, consider this knife the reward for your suffering — the handle-over-blade design is a natural for working on a lower surface.

Bespoke Post remains one of my favorite guy-friendly subscriptions — there are so many different themes to choose from, and I always get really excited about using everything right off the bat.  The quality of the items, whether it be a hobby kit, apparel, or food related, always make me feel like I am investing in my quality of life rather than justing getting something to set it aside.
