The art print of the month is “Catered Party” by Marc Bell.

Marc Bell is a Canadian artist and small-press comics machine. Prolific to an almost disturbing degree, Marc creates more intricate artworks per year than some artists make in their lifetime. Taking the insanity one step further, his drawings appear in numerous books, mini-comics, anthologies and graphic novels (created both by himself and in collaboration with many others). Somehow, he also manages to exhibit his originals with some regularity. If someone can bottle and sell what this guy runs on, please contact us immediately.

Using his own supply of unfinished drawings, paper scraps, and found ephemera, Marc’s artworks are densely layered assemblages blurring the line between so-called fine art, folk art, collage, comics, and doodling. Never one to like the mainstream rendition of comics (think Marvel), Marc’s exhaustively intricate drawings vibrate on the page, inviting the very idea of ‘comics’ to dance to a different beat.

The artist’s bio is included on the back of the print. I would have preferred a separate sheet, because this is inaccessible once you frame it.

This wasn’t my favorite print in the world, but I didn’t hate it. I subscribed for 3 months to give it a shot – I thought it was unfair to subscribe to anything less, and I like supporting artists. I am hoping for a different style next month, but I’m pretty sure everything in this subscription will be offbeat and quirky!
