IMG_7380Nomadik is a subscription box for outdoor enthusiasts that helps you “get outside, explore, and have some fun–it’s good for the soul!” – Pat Hines, Nomadik’s Founder

Each month, expect to receive unique, functional gear designed to increase your fun in the outdoors. All products have been trail tested by an outdoor adventurer and will often incorporate new technologies. Each box will contain one main product, between one and three smaller products and one or two inspirational items to get you outdoors.

They’re still very new, and it looks like they’ve tweaked their subscription. Whereas before it had been a bimonthly subscription, they’ve changed it to monthly and have lowered the cost of individual boxes. Although a single box costs $30, the cost per box goes down with longer subscriptions. Nomadik’s goal is to provide boxes whose retail values are roughly $40. Although they may fall just short of that some months, other months will have a slightly higher retail value.

IMG_7383July 2016’s box contains the following: a solar light, a chemical sunscreen, two organic trail bars and a spork.

IMG_7389I like how the curator includes descriptions of each item along with their retail values on the enclosed information card.

IMG_7386This month’s featured item is a small, lightweight portable lantern. Produced by Nokero (which stands for “no kerosene”), this solar light ($19.99) is the perfect outdoor lighting solution for camping, backpacking, emergencies and other off the grid lighting needs. After charging for 6-8 hours in the sun, this small weatherproof workhorse provides either 6 hours of light on “high” or 15 hours of light on “low.” Designed to work either by hanging from the attached carabiner or by standing on its own with the detachable base, this 100% solar light can easily go from a picnic table to a tent and back again. For every purchase, Nokero will donate a light to a person in the developing world living off of the electricity grid.

IMG_7384I was delighted to see that Nomadik included a letter from Nokero’s Founder and CEO that included a coupon code that can be used to obtain discounts on future purchases.

IMG_7387RealTree Dry Touch Sunscreen ($10) is a chemical sunscreen with an SPF 30 rating. Providing broad spectrum UVA and UVB sun protection, it’s water resistant for up to 80 minutes and designed for outdoorsmen.

IMG_7392These Phive Bars ($5.98 for two, based on the cost of 12) are my new favorite energy bars! If you like dates, you’ll love these! Made from a mix of fruits, nuts, seeds, quinoa, salt and nothing else, these are dense, slightly sweet and nutritious. I loved mine! After eating the blueberry for breakfast and trying the original, I reluctantly offered the rest of the original to my kids as a snack on their hike. When they returned, the rest of the bar was gone, and they wanted more. I love that Nomadik enclosed a coupon to receive a discount on future purchases!

IMG_7388When I saw this Light My Fire Yellow Spork ($2.49, based on the cost of 4), I couldn’t help but smile! In late spring, I went camping at Guadalupe River State Park with my son. My Texas State Park Pass was about to expire, though, so I walked into the ranger station to renew it. While inside, I overheard a father carrying an infant asking if he could buy a spoon. The rangers told him he’d have to drive about a half an hour to find a place that sold cutlery. I interrupted, because I happened to have a four pack of sporks from Light My Fire that hadn’t been used. He said he really only needed one, so I let him pick out his favorite color. He picked yellow. I just assumed that I’d have to buy another spork once my daughter started camping, but now that won’t be necessary! Not only do I now have four, they are all in different colors. Thanks, Nomadik!

For those unfamiliar with Light My Fire sporks, they’re lightweight, dishwasher safe, BPA-free and extremely durable. As an added bonus, they’re heat resistant and safe to use with nonstick cookware. They come in an array of colors. For those who are interested and don’t mind the additional cost, they also come in titanium.

The inclusion of this coupon for discounts on headlamps produced by Third Eye was an added bonus!

As someone who enjoys hiking, tent camping, animal tracking and just hanging out in the outdoors, I love Nomadik! The products are always top notch, useful and cool. I was mildly disappointed that this month’s box didn’t include an inspirational item, like a photo or map. The picture of Half Dome in the inaugural box was awesome, and I hope they go back to including something similar. Even if they don’t, it’s still a fabulous box, but the added inspirational item really sets them apart.
