Your books arrive safely packed with paper to prevent them from moving around.  I received 2 hardcovers this month.  From the covers, they look to be set in the Victorian era.

Jane Eyre is my favorite book amongst titles by the Bronte sisters, and I love this empowering quote.

Did you know?  In Philadelphia, 13 rockets were fired on July 4th, 1777 to recognize the independence of the 13 colonies.  This set the trend of fireworks displays each year.

The Fortune Hunter by Daisy Goodwin ($19.62):  Well, I was right in my assumption of the Victorian era with this.  I love a good story featuring royalty or the aristocracy, and this one has a possible love triangle as well.  Sounds like this will take a few poolside sessions to finish.  I can’t wait – for the story or the pool.  Heck, it’s hot here!

The Fortune Hunter, the New York Times bestselling novel by Daisy Goodwin, is a lush, irresistible story of the public lives and private longings of grand historical figures.

Empress Elizabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, is the Princess Diana of nineteenth-century Europe. Famously beautiful, as captured in a portrait with diamond stars in her hair, she is unfulfilled in her marriage to the older Emperor Franz Joseph. Sisi has spent years evading the stifling formality of royal life on her private train or yacht or, whenever she can, on the back of a horse.

Captain Bay Middleton is dashing, young, and the finest horseman in England. He is also impoverished, with no hope of buying the horse needed to win the Grand National—until he meets Charlotte Baird. A clever, plainspoken heiress whose money gives her a choice among suitors, Charlotte falls in love with Bay, the first man to really notice her, for his vulnerability as well as his glamour. When Sisi joins the legendary hunt organized by Earl Spencer in England, Bay is asked to guide her on the treacherous course. Their shared passion for riding leads to an infatuation that jeopardizes the growing bond between Bay and Charlotte, and threatens all of their futures.

I Always Loved You by Robin Oliveira ($5.36):  Two-for-two on the Victorian period.  My knowledge of fashion is useful for literature.  Ha!  Amazon.com has this listed at a range of prices, depending on which cover art you select.  I listed/linked the lowest price; the highest was $30.99.  While I’ve admired the beauty in the works of Cassatt and Degas, neither artists’ paintings really moved me.  However, this love story between them seems intriguing.

A story of Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas, from the New York Times bestselling author of  My Name Is Mary Sutter

The young Mary Cassatt never thought moving to Paris after the Civil War to be an artist was going to be easy, but when, after a decade of work, her submission to the Paris Salon is rejected, Mary’s fierce determination wavers. Her father is begging her to return to Philadelphia to find a husband before it is too late, her sister Lydia is falling mysteriously ill, and worse, Mary is beginning to doubt herself. Then one evening a friend introduces her to Edgar Degas and her life changes forever. Years later she will learn that he had begged for the introduction, but in that moment their meeting seems a miracle. So begins the defining period of her life and the most tempestuous of relationships.

In I Always Loved You, Robin Oliveira brilliantly re-creates the irresistible world of Belle Époque Paris, writing with grace and uncommon insight into the passion and foibles of the human heart.

For readers of The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan.

The value of this month’s box was $25, using the lower price for the second book.  This does cover the cost of the box.  Both authors are new to me, so I am looking forward to the stories and seeing if I like their writing styles.  BookCase.Club  has been a fun subscription and is forcing me to make time to read, which I’ve missed for a while.

Last month, I said my vacation goal was to finish two previously received titles.  Well, I accomplished 1/2 my goal.  I did manage to read The Someday Jar.  It was a very quick read.  The story was cute, although a bit predictable.  For me, the comparisons to Sophie Kinsella were a little off.
