Bokksu is a premium snack box that features authentic Japanese snacks, as well as a tea pairing to go with it. The items are what you can’t easily find here across the pond, so trying them is a real treat and always a fun experience! I love learning about the different regions of Japan, too. Last month’s box was my first and I really enjoyed it, so I’m excited to see what this month has in store.

Bokksu now ships to Canada! And shipping is only $5 which is super reasonable!

Everything is packed safely, including a handwritten note from the founder Danny!

Bokksu has switched up their product card! Last month it was half the size, but I personally like this layout better!

July’s theme is Natsubate, which is summer fatigue often experienced in Japan due to their humid summers! (natsu = summer) All the treats in July’s box are meant to help you combat natsubate. As a Canadian, our summers don’t last quite as long, but they’re still pretty sweltering for us, and I don’t do well in the heat, so I’m excited to give these chilly treats a try.

Yubari Melon Pure Jelly These are like jelly shots! They’re so small and cute! They are made of canteloupe from Hokkaido called Yubari, and even though I’m not a huge melon fan I thought these were pretty good! — I put mine in the fridge to chill but you can also freeze them.

Mikan Jelly This was my favourite item in the box! Mikan are tangerines, and this jelly was juicy and flavourful and was packed with pieces of fruit! I chilled this one in the fridge as well and it was delicious!

Monaka These wafers are fulled with red bean paste. We were sent two different flavours (chestnut, unwrapped) and traditional red bean. I enjoyed the light but sweet flavouring of the chestnut and red bean flavours! The wafers added a bit of crunch, but they were very fragile and crumbly!

Mizu Yokan These yokan are made of red bean paste and sugar, but with more water (mizu). The result is a jelly-like dessert that you serve chilled and slice up. We were sent three flavours, but my limited Japanese made it a challenge to translate! The green one is matcha, and this red flavour mostly tastes like red bean. It’s a very light and delicate taste, but I’m not sure I like the jelly consistency! It reminded me a little bit of tofu because it’s more firm than the other two jelly treats we were sent.

We were also sent Yuzu mochi! I took a picture but my camera ate it — it must have liked them as much as I did. Yuzu is a Japanese citrus that is definitely refreshing, and worked well with the texture of the mochi.

The tea this month is Mugicha, which is a barley grain tea. It’s caffeine free (hooray!) and is usually served chilled. Bokksu sent us brewing instructions for two ways to brew it — a standard version and a quick brew. I did the quick brew method, but I wasn’t 100% sure how light the tea should be.

Rare angled shot! The colour I ended up with was a gorgeous golden colour, and the brew itself? Pretty tasty! It’s definitely not a sweet tea, or what I would have picked for myself, but I thought it was really refreshing and definitely something new to try!

So that was July’s Bokksu! I apologise again for missing a few photos due to my phone’s issues. I really like Bokksu because they send items I would never normally get a chance to try. Even if something isn’t my cup of tea in terms of personal preference, I like challenging myself to try everything at least once and being adventurous! My favourite item was definitely the mikan jelly and the monaka treats!
