IMG_4859Global Wine Cellars is a wine club that sources its wines from around the world. Each shipment, you’ll receive either three or six bottles of wine curated by five experts, including one Master of Wine. Global Wine Cellars offers three different wine clubs: the Global Getaway Club sends out three bottles of wine every two months (roughly $15/bottle); the Global Discovery Club sends out six bottles of wine every three months (roughly $15/bottle); and the Global Access Club sends out six bottles of wine every three months (roughly $25/bottle). This month I received six bottles of wine as part of the Global Discovery Club.

IMG_4861The six bottles arrive in a nondescript box.

As this was my first shipment from Global Wine Cellars, my box included a gorgeous booklet detailing the benefits of club membership, including a 10% discount everyday in the wine shop as well as larger discounts for bottles on sale.

My package also included a lovely book detailing the significance of each wine in this month’s shipment.

Bruno Rocca’s 2012 Trifolé Dolcetto d’Alba ($25; $22.50 for members) is produced from 40-50 year old Dolcetto vines grown on a hillside vineyard. It had sharp tannins and tasted of pepper. It was really spicy! Global Wine Cellars describes this as having plum and cherry notes with only hints of hibiscus and white pepper, but quite honestly, there was so much pepper that neither my husband nor I could taste much else. Although the pepper hit the palate immediately, it did not have a lingering finish. This wine would be great with some noodles in a spicy tomato sauce.

IMG_4936This 2010 Roxy Ann Claret ($26; $23.40 for Members) is a medium-bodied Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. It’s juicy and somewhat fruit-forward. It tastes of berries. Global Wine Cellars recommends pairing it with grilled red meat and game.

I loved Banshee’s 2012 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay ($25; $22.50 for Members, although it’s currently sold out)! It possessed just the right amount of vanilla from oaking for my taste. Packed with apple, pear and citrus flavors, it was smooth, dry and delicious!  What a treat! This is my new favorite Chardonnay at this price point for sure!

IMG_5210Tábula Damana’s 2010 Crianza ($28; $25.20 for Members) is produced from tempranillo grapes. It has sharp tannins and a full body. It really needs to be decanted to be enjoyed properly! After letting it aerate, I very much enjoyed its fruit and chocolate flavors.

IMG_5215 (2)The 2013 Högl Grüner Veltliner from Wachau, Austria ($25; $22.50 for Members, although it’s currently sold out) was a delightful surprise! As this was the first time I’ve ever had a Grüner Veltliner, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was thrilled to find myself drinking a fantastic, crisp, cool, fruity and dry white with excellent minerality. The citrus, apple and pear notes were lovely. This is Högl’s entry-level wine, produced from relatively young vines on steppes near the Danube. Clearly I need to search out their higher-end wines too!

Of all the wines I received in this shipment, Eighth Wonder’s 2011 Silver Tree Reserve Estate Grown Meritage ($25; $22.50 for Members) was the least successful. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, this wine was very fruit forward. It tasted heavily of coffee, which I don’t appreciate. Still, I was excited to have received a bottle to try from South Africa. Does any one have any African wines that they would recommend?

Overall, I really enjoyed this month’s installment of Global Wine Cellars! I loved how distinct the wines all were from one another and how the curators really did span the globe when selecting these bottles. I even got to try new varietals this month, some of which I loved. It doesn’t get much better than that!
