Tetherbox is a monthly subscription box that delivers a care package of essential items for college students. The subscription costs $28.65 per month, plus $2 shipping — you can save $2/box by pre-ordering a semester of boxes (4 months), or save $4/box by pre-ordering a years worth (8 months). Shipments are pegged to the school calendar, with each box shipping the second week of the month — May and December boxes ship the last week of April and November, respectively. Each care package from TetherBox contains specially picked snacks, personal care products, gadgets and a lot more surprises. TetherBox partners with different student ambassadors every month to stay up to date on the needs of college students.
The items are carefully wrapped in a white tissue paper, giving it a genuine care package feel.

Jackson’s Honest Barbeque Potato Chips ($1.19): These chips are cooked kettle style in coconut oil. It gives the chips a heartier crunch than traditional potato chips, but still not as violently crunchy as typical kettle chips. The oil gives the chips an aftertaste that was surprisingly nothing like coconut — it reminded me a bit of truffled chips.
The hearty crunch is complemented with a pleasant not-too-sweet and not-too-spicy BBQ dusting.
Karmic Nature Lip Balm ($2.99): Late nights and little sleep are rough on the body, and lips are one of the first things to suffer. Made with beeswax and natural oils, including almond, coconut, and avocado, this balm has an ingredients list that won’t give you pause.
Wrigley’s Extra Peppermint Gum ($1): An on-the-go cure for coffee breath, peppermint gum is both invigorating and soothing. Wrigley’s Extra is a standard bearer among chewing gums.
TetherBox Portable Phone Charger ($12.99): Smartphones are lifelines, and nothing sends a Millennial into a panic faster than a cell phone with no battery left. This is doubly true when all the notes for your open book exam are on your phone. This charger comes with a USB cord that allows it to charge from a computer.

Shark Stimulation Energy Drink: Made by Osotspa, a Thai beverage company in operation for 120 years, Shark Stimulation is a carbonated version of Shark Energy Drink. Shark uses only coffee beans for its caffeine, forgoing guarana and artificial caffeine sources, and the brand prides itself on having a fruitier flavor than competitors.
240 Sweet S’mores ($10): These gourmet marshmallows are softer than ordinary jet puffed confections, and they have a truer and sweeter flavor — there is no corn starch and powdered sugar layer to eat through, either.
They captured the S’Mores flavoring quite well and even went so far as dusting the squares with cracker dust and dotting them with chocolate chips. These are a wonderfully sweet indulgence, and they are great item to receive in a box, since I probably wouldn’t spend $10 to buy them directly.
I like the concept of this box, as it is one of the few subscriptions (excluding “of the month” clubs) that is really designed for giving as a gift. The timing of shipments is conveniently tied to the school calendar, too, so you don’t have to mess around with mail forwarding, holds, or address changes — the end of semester boxes are even shipped a couple weeks early as to not arrive while the recipient is out of town on break. All the items were very likely to be used or consumed — though none were truly earth-shattering, they were practical picks that were thoughtfully chosen. This month’s box was finals themed, and I’m curious as to how the time of year and theme impact the composition of each box.
