To celebrate Black Day, April 14th, the Snack Fever team offered a special edition Black Day Box.  For $30, this box comes with a variety of jjajangmyun options and a bonus gift of Korean metal chopsticks.  Snack Fever is a monthly subscription box that delivers all your favorite Korean snacks, as well as other hard-to-find Korean treats. Each month, subscribers will get  5 to 12 Korean snacks and treats, depending on their subscription. Snack Fever is available in three boxes, the mini box, the original box, and the deluxe box, and subscriptions are $11, $18, and $38, respectively, every month.

On the 14th day of each month, Koreans have a designated way of celebrating their loved ones (for a full list, click here).  If you’re single, then February and March can be pretty low.  Feb. 14th is Valentine’s Day, when girls give guys gifts (yes, you read that right).  Then on March 14th, the guys give gifts to the girls.  Hopefully, singles or solos find someone to be with during this time, but if not then April 14th or Black Day is for you.  On this day, singles wear black and gather together to commiserate over black-colored foods, like jjajangmyun (noodles made with a black bean sauce).

My first look in the Black Day Box.   I don’t know whether to laugh or be miserable, but I will eat well in any case.black dayThe information card has pictures of each item on the front and directions on making your own jjajang meals on the back.  The characters on the card are just too much.  I can’t right now.  LOL

And here is my Black Day feast.  There’s a lot of food here (enough for 8-10 people), so I can either binge or host a dinner party for miserable singles.

“Cheer up, solos!” Sticker:  The Snack Fever team definitely has a sense of humor.  Here’s a sticker to give you hope for next year.

Instant jjajangmyun packets (from l-r Samyang Chacharoni, Nongshim Zha Wang, and Paldo Jjajangmen):  I’ve purchased each of these in the past, and the Nongshim is probably my favorite.  They each feature instant noodles, a vegetable packet, oil, and seasoning mix.  To make – add the noodles and vegetables to boiling water and cook for 5-6 minutes, drain all or most of the water (depending on brand), and add oil and seasoning mix.

Ottogi Cooked Rice Bowls (white and brown rice):  These are microwaveable bowls of short-grain rice.  Cook for 2 minutes and enjoy with your favorite sides.  I like these for quick lunches or dinners when I don’t want or need to make an entire pot of rice.

Dong Won Jjajang Tuna:  This is a new one for me.  The can contains tuna fish stirred in jjajang sauce.  Per the information card, serve this over hot rice.  You can add more vegetables if you like, or try it with a fried egg and corn over the rice.  I’ll break this out when I’m feeling adventurous.

Ottogi Black Bean (Jjajang) Sauce:  Want it semi-homemade?  Add your own mix of veggies and meat to this sauce base and serve over rice or noodles.  This serves 5.

Ottogi Wheat Noodles:  And speaking of noodles, here they are.  This pack also serves 5.  These are the broad, flat cousin of somyun noodles (like linguine to angel hair).  Kalguksu, as they are called, are reminiscent of hand cut noodles due to their size.  These can be used in a variety of soups and noodles dishes.

Metal Korean Chopsticks:  I had to laugh when I saw these in my box…  I already own 5 pairs of the EXACT chopsticks!  So now, I have an even number of sets.  One of the unique things about Korean chopsticks is that they are made of metal, typically stainless steel (Chinese and Japanese chopsticks tend to be made of natural materials).

The Snack Fever Black Day Box was a lot of fun for me.  On a day when I should have been sad to be single, I was happy to be eating yummy noodles.  I can get chocolates and flowers any day.  Even if I’m in a relationship next year, I’d get this box… there’s enough in here to share.
