Everything in this box! There are a few options – you can pick one of 3 specific blends – Birdseye House Blend (Ethiopian & Colombian), Old River dark roast, Rosena espresso blend, or Roaster’s Pick. I went with the Roaster’s Pick, which promises the highest quality single origin coffee.
An information card is included in the box, but it doesn’t provide more details about the coffee that was sent. The exact farmers, process, and varietals remain a mystery, but we know they are all Arabica beans. The beans are “single origin,” but I am not sure how big or small an origin we are talking about. Usually the term implies that the beans are at least from within the same county/province/district, or the same geographic region if it crosses political boundaries.
This batch of coffee beans are organically grown and fair trade acquired from Ethiopia– they were roasted in Burton, Ohio, and shipped the very next day. There is some variation in the color of the beans, so this may be simply an all-Ethiopian blend.
Whatever the precise identity of the beans, they make a very nice cup of coffee, and they certainly taste like they are from Ethiopia. The beans have light hints of lemon, floral, and tea notes, but these are mellowed heavily by the moderately dark roast. A nice thick, dry milk chocolate body is paired with a dark chocolate base note and a touch of stonefruit. Neither chocolate is bitter, but rather create a full, very enjoyable body with more gravitas and less prancing than typical in an Ethiopian. Many Ethiopian coffees display flighty and vibrant flavor notes but are weak bodied. This offering manages to render an Ethiopian brew that rivals any as an everyday- drinkable morning cup of coffee.
