Kaffe Box (2)

Kaffe Box is a monthly coffee subscription featuring select whole bean coffees from Scandinavia’s best roasters.  Each month, you receive 1-4 bags of beans from a different roaster.  This month’s beans arrived in a large flat envelope instead of a box.   We received the 250g subscription which includes 2 bags for roughly $17 US (including international shipping).

Kaffe Box (4)

The info card has a giant Kaffe Box logo on one side and details on the coffee on the reverse side.  We received two 125g selections from Kaffa (different company from the box despite the similar name), a Norwegian roast house.   The card contains information on the coffee selected for this month’s box, as well as a bit of background on the roaster who produced it. Kaffe Box lets the roasters select which beans will represent their work, ensuring that you receive the beans of which they are most proud.  This month’s offering comes from Kaffa Coffee Roastery, a roastery based in Oslo, Norway.  The proprietor is Robert William Thoresen, the 2000 World Champion of Barista Art.

The bags are provided with the roaster’s labels, which is a bit different than most coffee subscriptions that usually re-bag in their own branding.  The first bag is Daniel Moreno from Santa Barbara, Honduras.  And if you are wondering why the name of the coffee sounds like a man’s name, it’s because it is the name of the farmer that actually owns the land and grew the beans.  Daniel Moreno is the patriarch over the Moreno family and their coffee plantations known collectively as “El Fifo”.   It’s nice to be able to put a face with the origin of a product.

The type of coffee bean, or cultivar is Pacas.  It is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety and was discovered in El Salvador in 1949.

Kaffe Box (28)

Magic beans with which you can concoct the sweetest elixir.

Kaffe Box (19)

A lighter roast representative of the Norwegian roasting tradition this coffee is mild and fruity with a peachy taste and a figgy sweetness.   It had a smooth texture and a perfectly slightly sweet finish.

Kaffe Box (9)

The second bag was from La Palma & El Tucan.

Kaffe Box (8)

The little sticker on the bag tells us, “La Palma & El Tucan is a unique coffee farm and process station in Columbia.  Thru the project Neighbors & Crops they help the farmers in the area with growing and harvesting to increase the quality.  During the process they work more like a wine producer than a traditional coffee producer.  With controlled fermentation we get flavors out of this castillo we never expected.”

Kaffe Box (15)

I think coffee beans are beautiful.  These have more of a white fleshiness in the center than the average coffee bean.

Kaffe Box (11)

The Castillo varietal comes from Columbia and in this case, Cuninamarca.

Kaffe Box (12)

You can see the white pieces from the center of the beans.  I believe this is due to the fermentation part of the processing and it can be indicative of a semi-dry processing that reaps the best of both wet and dry coffee processing.

Kaffe Box (18)

The coffee had a syrupy body with a noted sweetness, similar to the other varietal we received, but with more acidity.  It made a good cup.

This is a high quality coffee subscription box.  Having international coffee that is fairly traded and superbly processed and roasted sent to your front door is always a good idea.
