Hatchery April 2016 Tasting Subscription Box Review & Coupon

Hatchery is a gourmet food sampling subscription box. For $25 per month including shipping you’ll get 5-6 sample sizes of artisan-produced small-batch foods, which you can buy in the shop. I like the idea of small-batch foods and obviously they are hard to find if they don’t have any sort of distribution deal, so this is a neat box!  Items may include spreads, condiments, jams, honeys, syrups, cooking sauces, oils, vinegars, salts, spices, seasonings, baking ingredients and cocktail mixers.

The Tasting Guide contains all the information on the products, the artisans that produce them, and even suggested recipes. There are additional recipes available on Hatchery’s website.

The packaging for this box is simple and beautiful.  Each item is individually-wrapped before being nestled in the box. It also makes for a beautifully presented gift.

Give your taste buds some gourmet loving. The sizes are large enough to determine if they are a keeper, but not overly large where they are sitting in your pantry for a long time. It’s easy to finish the box in a month if you so desire.

A fold-out information card details each maker and the included product. The card notes what the item pairs well with, the name of the chef-inspired recipe available on the Hatchery site (see them here), and the qualities of the product, included whether it is all natural, non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, vegetarian, and vegan.

Barbecue season is here! The Saint Lucifer Spice #11 ($1.60?) is begging to be used on burgers. Fiery habanero peppers, garlic, vinegar, and salt are waiting to tempt your taste buds. You can add a dash to take your Bloody Mary to new heights.  It’s a spicy twist to the hot sauce!

Chocolate cookies are now healthier for you! Use the Sweet Revenge Coconut Flower Nectar ($2.24) for a non-gmo and low glycemic alternative to sugar. It has a light, sweet taste and can be used cup for cup in recipes. That means no fiddling with figuring out the correct measurements when substituting the coconut flower nectar for sugar. I can’t wait to give this a try.

The Lavender Simple Syrup ($2.00) has a sweet light lavender taste. The first ingredient is pure cane sugar giving it a sweet taste. It adds a delightful lavender taste to a recipe instead of overpowering it. The bottle has a non-alcohol and alcohol recipes for it. I will try it out in a couple of baking recipes to see what the family thinks of it. It has a wonderful lavender scent to it.

My favorite from the box is the Champagne Vinaigrette (apx 1.00). It enhanced my salad by giving it a sweet, mellow taste. I am going to drizzle some on a chicken dish later this week. The bottle is around one ounce and is the ideal size to bring to the workplace to add a little pizzazz to your meal.

The Formosa Habanero Hot Sauce ($2.40) glides out of the bottle. Formosa fans will be happy to try out the Habanero Hot Sauce. It’s a delicious combination of spicy and savory flavors making it great to be used as a hot sauce or a marinade sauce. The family recipe is made in San Jose, California.

I calculated the value to be around $9.24 based mainly on per ounce pricing. The box generally has a value of $10.00 or less.  The box is an enjoyable way to learn about companies that are passionate about their products. The food items are high quality with real food ingredients. It’s a box best suited for someone looking for a gourmet tasting experience or as a gift.
