I selected the Read to Me Case.

IMG_4231This month’s package arrived well-packed with a small piece of tissue paper providing extra support during transport. Once I removed it, I was greeted by a delightful collection of illustrated children’s books. I called my son to come join me. He was so excited to read them!

IMG_4233 (2)The package contained four picture books: “10 Little Penguins” by Kate Toms, “Once Upon a Memory” by Nina Laden, “Cookie Meets Peanut” by Bethenny Frankel and “The Nuts: Bedtime at the Nut House” by Eric Litwin.

“10 Little Penguins” ($16.95 list) by Kate Toms is a fun counting book for children. This time, though, instead of counting up, the children practice counting down. My son had fun predicting what number would come next. “If you take one away from five, how many do you have left?” I really enjoyed the illustrations, which appeared to be pictures of handstitched penguins up to all sorts of shenanigans.

“Once Upon a Memory” ($12.94) by Nina Laden was a great book for a parent to read to an older child (a 4 year old, as opposed to a 2 year old). The illustrations are exquisite, and the beautiful text references facts that older children will understand, but that might be beyond the understanding of the youngest children. If you read it to the youngest children, be prepared for lots of questions!

As a mother watching my two children grow up all too quickly, the nostalgia permeating through this book was very special to me. I loved how at the end, the author and illustrator listed things they were thankful for. This prompted a nice conversation with my son about things we were thankful for.

“Cookie Meets Peanut” ($12.86) by Bethenny Frankel is a story of a single gal with a dog who has a baby. The baby takes over her mom’s attention and the dog feels left out. Friction continues to mount until the girl begins to grow up and the dog and the girl play together. Then all is happy at home again.

This would make a helpful read for families with pets who don’t get along with small children. It would help children understand that, over time, with love and attention, pets will come around and enjoy playing with them. The book would also be worthwhile to show children that families come in all different types. Some children live with only their mommy.

The illustrations in the book were very cute.

“The Nuts: Bedtime at the Nut House” ($13.43) by Eric Litwin is a tale of a nut family whose children’s before bedtime antics will surely resonate with parents and children alike. What sets this book apart is the hilarity with which the children defy their mother. Riddled with nut puns, this will be a win for parents and older children alike.

I really enjoyed this month’s Read to Me Case from BookCase.Club! All four of these books were new to us, and we will happily read them again and again. Each book was engaging and included great, age-appropriate messages and themes. This was a real win for us. We can’t wait to see what they send next month!
