Scent Trunk is a fragrance subscription that delivers three hand-picked decants to your mailbox every month. They’re Canadian run and operated but ship to Canada, the US, and the UK for free, and are looking to expand to other countries. Scent Trunk donates 1.5% of all sales to efforts to fight mental illness, which I think is fantastic. Scent Trunk’s cache of fragrances are niche — these won’t be perfumes you can pick up at Sephora.
The packaging is minimalist and sleek; they’ve also updated their logo on the boxes to match the rest of the printed material. The package was shipped lettermail from Toronto, so it just came in a plain envelope — the sturdy box keeps everything protected and secure, but they are looking into offering tracking for Canadian subscribers. The box contains the bag of decants as well as description cards which have a place on the back to spray scent. In the past they used to send a small pile of tester strips. Personally, I find spraying fragrance onto a card useless — it’s never indicative of how a scent will actually smell on your body, since your skin’s chemistry will always change it.
Coconut Milk ($100 USD for 2 fl oz) I love coconut so much! This perfume was already going to be great on me, if the almond didn’t overpower and turn everything to cherries. Luckily, it didn’t. The vanilla base was very heavy on me, so the end result smelled almost identical to Lavanila’s Vanilla Coconut perfume, or another perfume I once had by Comptoir Sud Pacifique.
Fruits of the Tree of Knowledge (60 GBP/$88 USD for 1.7 fl oz) This is a very interesting scent — it’s full of fruit but the sndalwood base makes everything that bit more soft and rich. I prefer it freshly sprayed to dried down, because a lot of the fruitiness fades over time. Still, this is absolutely gorgeous and wears well on my skin.
Briar Rose ($78 for 2.5 fl oz) Briar Rose was Sleeping Beauty’s alias! I love that. This is a rose blend with a variety of fruits sharing its space. The raspberry and blackberry are prominent at first sniff, but settle down to the rose and violet middle notes. I don’t like violet much on its own (same with patchouli) but here they play nicely together. I don’t get any of the cacao, but this is still enjoyable.
Scent Trunk is all about the curation — I don’t think it’s easy to match the perfect perfume with a specific person blindly like this, so I really appreciate how much effort and thought they put into it. Fragrance is such a personal thing! This month was my favourite and I loved that all three scents were light and bright for the warmer weather.
