Olfactif April 2016 Subscription Box Review

Olfactif is a monthly fragrance sampler subscription box. Every month you’ll receive 3 samples, each of which contains 15-20 applications of an independently designed perfume. Along with every $18 subscription box you receive, your account will be credited with an $18 voucher to use on fragrances from the store. Thus, if you purchase a full bottle of perfume each month, the subscription sampler is free. This month, though, there’s an extra bonus: in celebration of Olfactif’s birthday, you can get an $18 credit on every bottle of perfume purchased from the Olfactif store.

Olfactif focuses on niche fragrances, unique scents produced with higher quality and harder-to-find ingredients than you would encounter in a department store. They offer both a unisex scent sampler (this one!) and a men’s fragrance sampler.  You can check out our reviews of Olfactif Men here.

Each sampler contains a card that offers suggestions on how best to appreciate the fragrances: since scents develop over time on the body, don’t just assume your first experience will be your last! Spritz the fragrance on and smell it at different times to fully appreciate all that the artist intended to express through the scent.

Each month includes an information card about the fragrances. The theme for April is Spring Day.

Is there anything more perfect than a perfect spring day? The air smells of nature that has come back to life, the light is warm, and your field of vision is saturated with every shade of green.

All you need is a scent track–and here it is. Start the morning with a tangy, zesty citrus that will awaken your senses. In the afternoon, switch to a creamy, floral leather that is light as air. When evening rolls in, reach for the rich, sophisticated oriental that perfectly juxtaposes light and dark and leaves you feeling utterly transported to a different time and place.

The information card gives the general gist of each perfume, as well as the notes.

Olfactif April 2016 Spring Day (all prices listed are for full bottles, available for purchase from Olfactif):

• White Pepper Mandarin by Note Fragrances ($74). This light, airy scent evokes delicate orange blossoms on a spring morning. It’s light and lovely. It contains notes of white grapefruit, mandarin, rosemary, white pepper, sage, lemon verbena, white cedarwood and frankincense. Created by Danielle Fleming for her husband, Danielle found herself wearing it just as often as he did. Like Danielle, I would happily wear this any day.

• Sleeping with Ghosts by Mark Buxton ($195): This intriguing mix of vanilla, leather, grass, flower and fruit evokes the old whose memory has turned intriguing and sweet with the passage of time. Based on his recollection of a woman he eyed at a club years ago, Mark Buxton has produced a lovely scent based on old, weathered, familiar, beautifully aged leather. It’s nice to think of our memories in this light.

• Cher Wood by Molinard ($185): This intriguing combination of of wood, spice and fruit piqued my interest the moment I put it on. Mysterious like Robin Hood and his merry band in the Sherwood Forest and bold like Cher, I thought the whimsical name really hit the mark. Produced by a storied French perfumer, it has notes of oud, fruit-floral accords, cedar, patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, agarwood, amber and vanilla.

I really enjoyed wearing all three of these scents! While my favorite two were Cher Wood and White Pepper Mandarin, I would wear any of them happily. I haven’t had so much fun trying new scents in years. Thanks, Olfactif!
