LYFnow Love Yourself First Teen Subscription Box Review – April 2016

LYFnow (Love Yourself First now) is a monthly subscription box aimed at young women (14+), providing a “fun and inspiring monthly reminder to love yourself first.”  Each box will contain 4-6 fun, exciting, and functional items that will “inspire and guide young women to be the best they can” by loving themselves first.  The subscription cost is $29/month, with discounts for prepaying for multiple months.

I reviewed this box with the help of my teen and tween daughters (aged 11 and 14).   Let’s find out what’s wrapped up in this pretty lavender paper!

This month’s theme is “Express Yourself with Color” – and the card that comes with it explains that colors can express many different emotions and feelings.  Just like the last couple months, the box’s message and contents, as well as the company’s overall message of boosting self-esteem, is appropriate not just for my older daughter, who is in the age range suggested by the site (14+), but also for my younger, tween daughter.

Here is a picture of everything that was in the box this month.  Super colorful – just right for the “Express Yourself with Color” theme!

A much larger card was in the box this month – I liked the discussion of colors and how they reflect and can change your moods.  Another thing I liked about the card this month was the helpful hints for using the items.  While this may not have been as helpful in some of the previous boxes, I think the hints and instructions were particularly useful because of some of the “grown-up” type self care items in this month’s box.  As always, the card also lists retail prices for the various goodies.

In addition to the list of contents, there was a second card that described some emotions and feelings that are associated with various colors.  We thought it was fun to look to see what our favorite colors may express.  (Our favorite colors are orange, pink, and dark blue (indigo)).  Now, let’s look at the goodies!

First up was this pretty purple case.  What’s inside?  We thought it might be a purse or card holder…but instead it was something much more useful.

Manicure and Grooming Kit ($10):  This is a great little kit – as the card says, perfect for home or travel.  It has a nail file, tweezers, nail cleaning tools, clippers, a cuticle nipper, and cuticle scissors.  I have to say, I actually want one of these for myself!  It has everything you could want and is a nice, portable size.  Anyway, this was one of the “grown-up” type self-care items I mentioned above.  What a perfect item to bridge from girl to grown-up and to encourage good hygiene.  Plus, as the card says, you have to have groomed nails before you express yourself with color!  Although it may not have been my daughters’ favorite item in the box, I know that it will get the most and longest use from them.

4-Phase Professional Nail Buffer ($6):  Next, another “grown up” type item – a nail buffer block.  I like this item too because the instructions are displayed right on the block itself.  This makes it a good item to include for teen girls who may not be familiar with all of the steps of a full manicure.  I was shocked at how much fun my girls had just buffing and shining their nails.

Donut Worry Be Happy Nail Polish Kit ($10):  Don’t worry that this box is too “grown up” for teens (and tweens) though.  The next item is this fun bag of nail polish. 

The bag includes six fun spring nail polish colors, a toe separator for pedicures, and the little donut attached to the bag doubles as a nail file.  Super cute and fun!  Plus, the products were not tested on animals and are free from harsh chemicals.

Nail Applications ($6):  Next up are these fun nail stickers.  My younger daughter just loves these – and going with the theme, these are definitely colorful.

Crystal Charms ($4):  Wrapping up the color parade are these fun charms and sparkly beads that can be used to add 3D effects to the manicures.  My daughters haven’t used charms or sparkly beads like this before, but the younger one (who is a little more about all the bling) is looking forward to trying out something new.

Note Cards & Pencil ($3):  I’ve mentioned before how much I love when boxes expose girls to the lost art of letter writing.  This box included a set of three pretty (and colorful, of course) note cards and envelopes.

And for a fun touch, there is also a pencil decorated with colorful nail polish bottles.  Adorable!
Salt Water Taffy ($0.50):  Last, but certainly not least, candy!  This was fun and a different treat than the chocolates that are often included in the boxes we get.  Not only was it fun to get different flavors, but the colors of the taffy were perfect for the color-themed box.  My girls really enjoyed this surprise treat.

Both my daughters and I really like the LYFnow (Love Yourself First) boxes.  I think, after reviewing this box, I have finally figured out exactly what I like about these boxes (besides the monthly messages – which are great) — the products in this box are “grown up” enough to appeal to teens (and tweens) who want so much to grow up, but are still age appropriate and fun.  Plus the items are super useful.  Don’t get me wrong, we love silly novelty items or impractical goodies we’d never think to buy, but one impressive thing about the LYFnow boxes is that months after we open each box, we are still regularly using the items from previous boxes.  Of course, if you ask my girls, they would just say they love these boxes – and that’s pretty much the bottom line.
