Fuego Box April 2016 box

When we receive a Fuego box we know we’re in for a hot time!  Oh, yes, yes I did say that. 🙂 Fuego Box is a monthly hot sauce subscription box that brings the heat without being extreme, focusing instead on the best flavors (while still of course being hot – just without added heat extracts and the like).  They search out the best flavors to go with every type of food and discover new artisan hot sauce makers to bring to your door. Your first monthly box will be an introductory box (see our review of the Fuego Box intro box), with a tasting journal and two favorite hot sauces from Fuego Box. Subsequent boxes include 3 full-sized artisan-made hot sauces like this box.

Our Fuego Box arrived just in time for family night, a night that I invite the family, 9 in all, to come over for dinner.  I like to try hot sauce on plain rice, since most people don’t eat hot sauce by itself.  You can see from the picture the color of the hot sauce is very noticeable on the rice.

Hoardable Cruel & Unusual Punishment: This was tasty, sweet and HOT.  Instead of a blend of semi-hot peppers, it gets its heat from super-hot ghost peppers mixed in with onions and carrots.  This gives it a texture more like apple sauce than a steak sauce.  On a scale of 1-10 we gave it a 7.5.  Even my 9 year old granddaughter tried this first one.  She ran to get water and we had to stop her, as oil and water don’t mix!  We got her some milk and that was the trick.  She wouldn’t try anything else!
Verde Char Man Brand Hot Sauce:  We all agreed this was very sweet and we all, except the one granddaughter, liked it. We were surprised that it wasn’t hotter considering all the chilies that are listed in the ingredients.  It is a really bright and flavorful sauce, and the heat sneaks up on you a bit.  My oldest daughter claimed that hot sauce and took it home.  We rated this an 8.5.
Friendly Fire Tamarind + Ghost Pepper: Too bad my 9 year old granddaughter didn’t start off with this one.  It was very mild in spite of having ghost peppers in it.  Forget the Ghost part, Friendly Fire is a more accurate name.  We all agreed that his was very mild and smokey flavor.  The tamarind gives it an unexpected tanginess that makes the sauce stand out. We rated this a 7.  Brandy sampled this sauce later and declared that it would be superb with chili.

We are a little bit in love with Fuego Box.  The price point is OK, given the difficulty of obtaining a trio of sauces of this caliber on your own, but the coupon running right now knocks the price down to brick and mortar rate and makes it an awesome subscription to try — chances are you’ll get hooked!
