Scent Trunk is a fragrance subscription that delivers three hand-picked decants to your mailbox every month. They’re Canadian run and operated but ship to Canada, the US, and the UK for free, and are looking to expand to other countries. Scent Trunk donates 1.5% of all sales to efforts to fight mental illness, which I think is fantastic. Scent Trunk’s cache of fragrances are niche — these won’t be perfumes you can pick up at Sephora.
The packaging is minimalist and sleek; they’ve also updated their logo on the boxes to match the rest of the printed material. The package was shipped lettermail from Toronto, so it just came in a plain envelope — the sturdy box keeps everything protected and secure, but they are looking into offering tracking for Canadian subscribers. The box contains a black velvet bag with the three decants, as well as description cards which have a place on the back to spray scent. In the past they used to send a small pile of tester strips. Personally, I find spraying fragrance onto a card useless — it’s never indicative of how a scent will actually smell on your body, since your skin’s chemistry will always change it.
Pour Elle (55 Euro/$80 CAD for 3.4 fl oz) When I saw this had patchouli in it, I almost ran away screaming. It’s one of my least favourite notes. Luckily, it doesn’t rear its stinky head in this perfume — the base notes are Canadian fir (represent!) and tonka bean, but it’s definitely not a woodsy scent. It is quite heavy, however, and the initial throw is pretty strong. It dries down to something much more soft and complex, with a fruity sweetness thanks to the cherry. This has freesia in it, which is another of my least favourite notes, but it was surprisingly absent in this. I enjoyed this fragrance!
Etoile d’Or (150 Euro/$225 CAD for 3.4 fl oz) I love this. It has everything I adore — jasmine, red rose, musk. There’s something very nostalgic about this fragrance, which is strange since neither of my grandmothers wore much perfume. It might even be a perfume I used to wear that I’m reminded of. This is, again, a very heavy fragrance from the word ‘go’ — but it softens quickly into the middle notes which is the jasmine and red rose. The more I smell this, about three hours after applying it, the more I love it.
Sogno Reale (225 Euro/$330 CAD for 3.4 fl oz) All I get from this scent is leather, honestly. The initial scent is very alcohol-based, and it dries down to leather/musk. I’m really disappointed because it sounded really interesting.
Scent Trunk is all about the curation — I don’t think it’s easy to match the perfect perfume with a specific person blindly like this, so I really appreciate how much effort and thought they put into it. Fragrance is such a personal thing, but I’m overall pleased with my Scent Trunk experience — only one of the three was a dud! They do ask you to go and review the scents you’ve received so they can further tailor your selections to your preferences, which helps them tailor your box to your tastes.
