This month I received Guatemala Alta Verapaz Santa Isabel. I have the Origins subscription, but it’s easy to switch between the 3 types (Origins, Blend, Espresso) or one of the 8 specialty subscriptions available, as well as change the frequency and amount of coffee you receive in each shipment.  Each is produced from high-quality beans — it’s just a matter of what your taste preference is.  I like the variety of flavor notes and combinations that I get with the Origins subscription — as I find many of the most interesting flavor notes are intentionally mellowed and nearly disappear in a blend, though you may get a more balanced cup in the end.  I’ve had Blue Bottle Coffee blends (and espresso, though I prepared it as normal coffee) before, and they are selected and prepared with the same degree of mindfulness, though you will miss out on some of the delightful “rough edges” of the single-origin brews.   Currently, I prepare my beans with a Baratza Virtuoso burr grinder and make my coffee Americano-style with an Aeropress.

This coffee says it was roasted on March 3, and arrived March 5. Blue Bottle fudges the roast date by one day.

Blue Bottle Coffee‘s Description:

Farmer Luis “Wicho” Valdés has been growing coffee in high-elevation rainforests ever since he was a boy. His farm, Santa Isabel, was granted to the Valdes family by the Guatemalan president in 1875. Now, Wicho and his father (also Luis) oversee the estate together. Located in lush Alta Verapaz, nine months of steady rain extend the harvest period well into May. To combat the pervasive humidity, the Valdes family has perfected their pruning techniques and drying methods. They do all this while reforesting more than half of their farm’s land with cypress and pine. If a cup of coffee can reflect the character of a farm, this one does. With sturdy rosemary, sassy cranberry, and ephemeral jasmine, you can almost see the Caturra trees thriving at such great heights in spite of the never-ending patter of rain.

Blue Bottle Coffee‘s notes: Cranberry, jasmine, rosemary

blue bottle march review

My Notes:  This bean is truly unique.  It makes a well-balanced brew that drinks well, yet has a very complex palate.  The cranberry flavor note is highly-distinct and well-developed — one of the purest, and most unexpected, notes I’ve experienced.  The herbal and floral underpinnings are not as vivid, but they provide a pleasant, aromatic embrace.  This brew struck me a bit like a raspberry zinger in coffee guise, with a a zippy tart note that fits well into the otherwise mellow profile of the bean.
