March’s Treats Box explored the fabulous snacking culture of the United Kingdom!  Treats is a monthly snack subscription full of snacks from around the world. You can expect to receive eclectic and interesting snacks that you’ve never sampled before! The Standard Pack offers 4-5 snacks, while the Premium box offers 8-10. You’ll get your first box within a few days when you subscribe.

The packaging is simple and elegant.  Tissue paper keeps the contents a surprise, and nice introductory postcard welcomes you to your Treats destination — this month welcomed us to the UK with a beautiful shot of the church at Trentor (itself meaning “Hill of the Stone Tower” in Devonian)!

The curator’s note pointed out some of the items with distinctly local and traditional character.

The handy card give gives the name and maker of each treat (no translation needed for this box).  A short description of each snack is also given.  Take the link to the Treats site to learn more about each item.

Everything in the box.  The composition of each Treats collection depends on the local snacking culture, but there is usually a good mix of cookies or baked goods, small candies, and chocolate/caramel/marzipan/nougat, etc.  I love the sizing on the items — everything is always more than one taste worth, and often you receive several family-size packages.  This box had a few multi-serving items, but they weren’t as comically large as some have been in the past.

Walker’s Original Toffee:  This traditional English toffee is firm and chewy, with a buttery and sweet flavor.  To the American palate, it is a chewy caramel — not at all crisp or crunchy like toffee, but it is denser than a typical caramel or taffy.

Nestle Aero Mint Chocolate:  A thin coating of milk chocolate covers a minty interior that looks like frothy green milk foam.  The flavor combo is similar to an Andes mint, and the texture makes for a lighter bar (but it is not effervescent).

Lee’s Jaffa Orange:  Powerfully-orange fondant (made of egg white and sugar, it is an attempt at creating a marzipan-type texture) covered in dark chocolate.  The orange flavoring of this Scottish creation is only outdone by the sweetness of the filling.

Hill Biscuits Custard Creams:  A simple cookie that sounds fancier than it is — they are tasty and very similar to a white Oreo.

Nestle Lion Chocolate Bar:  This classic bar has changed a bit over time and comes in many varieties (the original creation incorporated a limited edition of berry flavored Special K cereal) — this new standard-bearer is a wafer bar coated with caramel and cereal crisps (no berry flavoring this time), and smothered in milk chocolate.  It is sweet, crisp and chewy all at once.

Rowntree’s Fruit Gums:  A traditional chewy candy dating back to 1893.  Similar to a gummy candy, but very firm and less saccharine.

Walker’s Pure Butter Shortbread:  Shortbread cookies at their finest, Walker’s are made in Scotland from only pure butter, wheat flour, sugar, and salt.

The fruit gums are the size of a few quarters stacked up.

Stockley’s Cola Cubes:  I expected a Turkish delight when biting into one of these candies, but they are cruchy and chewy instead.

With some of the exterior sugar dust removed, you can see the interior grain of the cube, like a block of ice carved from a giant sheet.

Guinness Burts Thick Cut Hand Cooked Potato Chips:  The Guinness flavoring is dark and powerful on these chips (shouldn’t they be crisps?).  Cocoa, barley malt, and cream powder mimic the taste of the famous malty beverage.

Tayto Prawn Cocktail Flavoured Potato Chips:  Potatoes from Northern Ireland are seasoned with a special prawn cocktail flavoring.  Tayto pioneered the flavored potato chip and remains an extremely popular brand.

Some of the Guinness chips were smothered with seasoning… for strength!

This Treats was pretty typical, in that it was simply loaded with tasty candy and snacks.  It’s one of our very favorite discover-foreign-foods boxes because every item is appealing (nothing too weird included merely for shock value).  This box can be tough to review, because the kids circle like vultures and absolutely destroy all the candy!

Treats from the UK are the best – all it’s missing is a bag of Walker’s crisps! The steak and cheese ones are to die for.
