IMG_1718Whimsy Mail and Putter Pails is a Canadian subscription box aimed for tweens aged 8-12. Whimsy Mail is geared for girls, and Putter Pails is for boys. This is a review of the Whimsy Mail box, because I may be in my 30s but I’m young at heart.

February’s theme is Fit & Fun, and Whimsy Mail has put together a very cool box around the theme. Whimsy Mail ships in a plain cardboard outer box, and is packed with brightly coloured paper squiggles. So many squiggles. I’m still picking them up around my house. In addition to a parents’ guide, there’s also a simple information sheet detailing the items enclosed.

Define Bottle 7oz Mini ($9.99) & Recipes The Define bottle is a fruit infused water bottle designed by a 13-year old entrepreneur — very cool! This is a miniature size that’s great for stashing away in a purse or backpack. Whimsy Mail included some simple recipes for infusions — just cut up your fruit, add it to the bottle, top up with water and hit the road.

Stretching Bands and Poses This soft elastic resistance band can be used to improve flexibility, and I think it would be a great introduction to yoga as well — some of the poses included remind me of yoga poses.

Twisty Fitness Band I have a small head, so this kid-friendly headband actually fits! It’s soft and stretchy, and holds my hair back. It’s not very grippy, so I wouldn’t wear it out for a run or anything where I get too sweaty, but I think it’ll work great for keeping my hair out of my face when I go for walks in the morning — it can get pretty windy.

Hacky Sack ($5.00) I am awful at hacky sack, but this made me smile and brought back memories of drama class back in high school. (We played it a lot when we were supposed to be doing things like learning lines and rehearsing.) It’s a game that can be played alone or with friends, and the possibilities for games and challenges are endless!

Snow Graffiti Kit Okay, this is the neatest idea, and I suddenly wish I had a) snow and b) kids. (Neither of these are things I normally want). The squeeze bottle has red drink mix in it, and there’s blue drink mix for the spray bottle. Just mix it up with water and create art in the snow. Now we just need to get some snow…

February’s Whimsy Box was a lot of fun to go through, and I liked the theme. I really appreciate the creativity that’s gone into this box, and the extra touches like the recipes and pose cards that supplement the more practical items. With the exception of the pink hairband, I think this box is actually pretty gender-neutral, and I’d be interested to see how the boy’s box differs. It’s hard to put a value on most of this box with the exception of the water bottle and the hacky sack, as many items are hand-made/printed, but I think it’s a neat box, and if you’re looking for fun ways to get kids and teens up and moving, this is a fun way to start.
