The packaging is simple and elegant.  Tissue paper keeps the contents a surprise, and nice introductory postcard welcomes you to your Treats destination — this month we visited the Netherlands!

The handy card give gives the name and maker of each treat, translated to English where necessary.  A short description of each snack is also given.  Take the link to the Treats site to learn more about each item.

Everything in the box.  The composition of each Treats collection depends on the local snacking culture, but there is usually a good mix of cookies or baked goods, small candies, and chocolate/caramel/marzipan/nougat, etc.  I love the sizing on the items — everything is always more than one taste worth, and often you receive several family-size boxes.

Napoleon Zwart Wit Kogels:  I’ve tried these before, but I apparently failed to learn my lesson.  The candy looks harmless enough, and the thick outer shell is a sweet caramel-flavored hard candy.  Once you reach the center, however, you release a licorice cream filling — it is very salty and has an extremely intense licorice flavor.  It is so strong that I had the scent of stinky cheese creepy into my sinuses (sounds odd, but its really the closest descriptor).  A nicely experience for folks who like this style of candy, but these may be a little intense for the less adventurous.

King Pepermunt:  These are like the child of Canada mints and NECCO Wafers.  Forgivingly crunchy like a NECCO, but two and a half times as thick, and with a strong (but not punishing) mint flavor.

Dutch Bakery Stroopies:  A classic stroopwafel, these have a sticky caramel filling between two thin and bending waffle cookies.  These are tasty straight from the package, but they are classically served steamed atop a hot coffee.  Stroopwafels have been big lately, stealing the ubiquity crown from salted caramel — I haven’t seen this brand before, so this was a first taste for me, despite the popularity of the product.

Venco Engelse Drop:  A very classy and approachable licorice chew, these are beautifully layered along with mild, sweet un-licoriced licorice (almost like fondant), making a beautiful and delicious treat.  Each arrangement results in a slightly different texture, too, with some relatively soft, others more chewy.

Droste Pastilles:  Made only of dark chocolate, these are perfect doses of chocolate to keep a chocolate lover on the level.  The chocolate is very flavorful, only slightly sweet, and has a delightfully smooth texture.

Hellema Fourre Choco Biscuits:  Oversized tea cookies with a rich chocolate creme filling.  Buttery and flaky instead of dry, these are very impressive tea biscuits!  I made the mistake of offering them to my boys — they chowed through most of the (rather large) pack.

Venter Chocolate Rolls:  A crisp rolled wafer (sort of like a crepe) coated and then drizzled with sweet (and very melty) chocolate.  These are really tasty, but also very messy because the chocolate melts easily.  The inside of the tube is hollow and uncoated — these would definitely be neater if they were filled rather than drizzled.

Baronie Classic Chocolate Sticks:  Creamy and mildly dark milk chocolate with rice crisps scattered throughout.  These are not like Pocky, as there is no central biscuit structure — it’s just very nice crisp-laden chocolate piped out in a line. Some subscribers received flavored sticks!

This Treats had a well-curated selection of Dutch classics.  It’s one of our very favorite discover-foreign-foods boxes because every item is appealing (nothing too weird included merely for shock value) — the only borderline item was the kugel, and those are just too classic and Dutch not to include!
