sumo crate january 2016 box

is a new monthly protein-centric snack subscription box. Every month you’ll receive 8-10 protein snacks with an average of 10-20 grams of protein. This box may be suitable for anyone that needs to focus on protein in their diet, including those with blood sugar control issues, bariatric patients, low carbers, and people who just focus on protein as a central part of their overall wellness plan.

sumo crate january 2016 unboxingI was excited to see an information card this month! It detailed the total amount of protein, fat, sugar, and fiber in the box, and broke it down by item. The card also stated the most noteworthy characteristic of each item!

The back of the card gave some details about the curation as well – noting that multiple snacks contained particular ingredients, describing the benefits of each ingredient.

JAVAPRO Protein Shake with Real Coffee: This protein shake contains 16 grams of protein (and 70 mg of caffeine!).  This is perfect for those occasions when you have to choose between coffee and breakfast.  Real coffee adds some zip, making this a great option for an on-the-go pick-me-up.

Coco Libre Chocolate Protein Coconut Water:  Coconut water has become very popular due to its electrolyte density and nutritional profile.  This drink adds 20 grams of protein and rich cocoa to the mix, making it helpful for builders as well as yogis.

Square Bar Cocoa Mint Organic Protein Bar:  This bar is as a much a treat as it is a protein bar.  The dark cocoa flavor makes it a bit like eating a dark chocolate bar.  With 12 grams of protein and 20 grams net carbs, this is an indulgence that will fit into most programs without much fuss.

ALOHA Chocolate Protein Powder 18 grams of protein per serving. This is a vegan plant-based complete protein and great for a meal replacement or smoothie addition. We purchase ALOHA quite a bit! You can check out all the free trials available on the ALOHA subscription box directory page.

Buff Bake Protein Cookie – Frosted Oatmeal Raisin This was SO good. It was delicious and soft and absolutely gigantic. It was hard to believe that it was a protein cookie, and had only 9 grams of sugar per serving (note that the information card gave the amounts only for one serving).

Buff Bake White Chocolate Protein Peanut Butter :  Peanut butter has long been a helpful item to incorporate in a high-protein diet, because it is versatile and adds a bit of protein.  This blend pushes it further by upping the protein, fiber, and taste.  I love white chocolate, and it is a flavor that goes extremely well with whey protein.  Flax provides an even healthier fat profile, and the chia adds a bit of texture — it is similar to rough-ground, peanut-only peanut butter.

Bubba’s Carolina Beef Jerky (Mountain Mesquite):  We both loved this item.  The barbecue flavor was really well developed and closer to a complete tomato-based, smoky barbecue than any other jerky I’ve had — most rely on liquid smoke for smokiness and don’t have an all-around barbecue flavor.  Just a tad sweet and spicy, this jerky was nice and tender.  The bag contains a flosser, something which should be required of all jerky.  This jerky was exceptionally good, and the company is also owned by a disabled veteran.

Ostrim Beef & Elk Stick:  Real elk adds a wild nuance to the flavor of this beef stick, boosting the protein to fat ratio.   Made with simple ingredients, this stick has a wide gauge and provides a whole meal worth of high-protein meat.

This was a really awesome box – between the two of us, we were happy to eat everything in it.  Protein is definitely the priority in this box — everything is packed with it, with, and many kept the carbs and sugar fairly low, as well.  Most of the items were really tasty and easy to incorporate into my meal plan because they were all focused on protein.  It is a superb box for those who occasionally need a meal substitute or on-the-go high-protein snack.  We loved it.

Next month SumoCrate is switching to a more general snacks /preworkout/energy drink model with different versions for men & women. We’re more than a little bummed about that because we love this box just the way it is. However, you can peek at the box before you purchase it, which is neat.
