Scent Trunk is a scent discovery subscription. They offer both a men’s and women’s version. Every month you’ll receive 3 niche scents to experience, try out, and enjoy! Fill out a brief profile on their site and you’ll receive a customized box of fragrances. They have a beautiful new website as well.
The three fragrances come in a velveteen bag inside a little box. You’ll get 6mL of each fragrance.
There are 3 information cards in the box – one for each fragrance, and you can spray them with the scents and make your own little card catalog. The cards have information on each scent, the longevity, and the sillage, which describes how far the perfume ingredients disperse (are you just smelling it or is everyone smelling it?), and ouch! The price! You get to sample extremely expensive fragrances in this one.
The tester cards are handy for a couple reasons — they let you separate the scents (which is very difficult when testing them all on your skin), and they let you test the sillage (which is nearly impossible without a separate test card). You’ll still want to actually wear the scents, though — the character of the fragrance can be quite different on skin.
Each of the sprayers has a cap and a label to identify the fragrance.
Pheromone by Marilyn Miglin: Zesty, herbaceous and woody, this fragrance opens with a strong dose of citrus and then turns to an almost hot herbaceous quality. Sweetened sandalwood tones leave a lasting sweet, woody warmth. The powdery tonka is powerful on the card, but it fades and is replaced with the assertive sandalwood when actually worn.
Every Storm a Serenade by Imaginary Authors: tantalizing eucalyptus and fresh seawater draw you in. Ambergris and calone create a strong ocean presence, with a sweet vetiver and piney spruce finish. The Ambergris really comes out when you actually wear the fragrance, though it remains quite soft on the test card.
No. 1 by Cognoscenti: Bergamot and fig create a sophisticated citrus opening note. The fresh, powdery scent of ylang ylang dominates the middle notes on the tester, but the Clary sage base really comes forth on the skin. The musk and suede finish is surprisingly sweet and bright.
This collection was not my favorite, but it was fun to try out. The Pheromone and No. 1 were each a bit sweet and powdery for my tastes, though these excesses were more subdued on the skin than they first seemed on the tester cards. Every Storm a Serenade had an interesting musky quality that was a bit more visceral than the typical aqua-themed scent. I am not a aqua kind of guy, but I liked this version — unfortunately, it seemed a bit short-lived compared to the other fragrances. The fact that I didn’t flip for this batch of fragrances makes me appreciate the subscription all the more — some selections are quite pricey, and it is nice to sample thoroughly before investing in a full-size bottle.
