Rising Sun Snacks: A New Day in Snacking is a monthly themed box of artisan snacks produced with the best organic and/or non-GMO ingredients its chefs can source. Each box contains five handmade snacks. Shipping is free, and discounts off the regular $24.99/month price are offered to those who prepay for either 3, 6 or 12 months at a time. The effective monthly cost for a 12 month prepaid subscription would be $19.99/month.

IMG_1553I was very impressed by how well the box was organized for shipment and how inviting everything looked as soon as I opened the box.

The box even came with a handwritten letter thanking me for joining the club! The letter was written by Sean, the Founder and CEO of the company.

The theme for this month’s box was Valentine’s Day. Four of the snacks contained either chocolate or cacao. All were sweet and delicious.

IMG_1561The box contained the following snacks: Strawberry Cocoa Granola ($5.99), Cupid’s Arrow Trail Mix ($5.99), Dark Chocolate Tropical Fruits ($4.99), Cinnasweet Pretzels ($3.99) and Cacao Goji Energy Bites ($5.99). Although you would save a little bit of money over the retail price for these snacks by joining the month to month club, you would save even more by prepaying for a longer membership. (You can also save on the snacks by buying in bulk.)

IMG_1562The Strawberry Cocoa Granola was delicious. Containing pieces of chocolate, chocolate covered granola and both dried strawberries and organic freeze-dried strawberries, this chocolate and strawberry snack would make for a decadent dessert. While I love freeze-dried organic strawberries out of the bag, I actually preferred the dried strawberries here. They were much more plump and moist, and I thought their texture complemented the chocolate well. Still, that’s a minor quibble. I could eat this happily day and night and never tire of it.

Chocolate and berries, decadent delight

Almonds and honey, sweetened just right

Coconut and spices, pleasant additions

A new treat for a Valentine’s tradition!

IMG_1563Cupid’s Arrow Trail Mix contained chocolate covered espresso beans, yogurt covered raisins, dried cranberries and maple glazed nuts. As soon as I opened the bag, I knew those were chocolate covered espresso beans; their aroma was striking! Unfortunately, on doctor’s orders, I couldn’t have them. Still, I ate what remained on the plate. Although I enjoyed it very much, I kept thinking about the aroma and how I was probably missing out on the depth of flavors by avoiding the chocolate covered espresso beans. I’ll see in a couple of weeks–I intend to bring this with me on a group Valentine’s Weekend animal tracking adventure. I’d say I’d bring the other snacks too, but they’re so delicious that I don’t think any will remain a week from now. The attached poem is very cute:

Cranberries are Red

Yogurt Raisins are White

Chocolate Espresso Beans & You

It’s Love at First Sight.

IMG_1564The Dark Chocolate Tropical Fruits were just that: low sugar, no sulfur dried pineapple and papaya drizzled in organic dark chocolate. The dried fruits had the consistency of jellied fruits; I originally thought that they were candy. The enclosed poem seemed apropos:

Delicious papaya, soft and sweet.

Paired with pineapple,sweet and tart.

Dark chocolate, such a treat.

Happy Belly, Happy Heart!

IMG_1565The Cinnasweet Pretzels are a combination of two of my favorite snack foods: cinnamon toast and pretzels. After pouring some on the plate, I thought “I’ll just try one before I take the picture.” Then I forgot about the picture, ate the whole plate and moved on before realizing I had to make another plate of these to photograph. After happily eating the second plate, I decided I needed to hold off so my kids could try them the following day. They ate the rest before the end of breakfast. They’re delicious.

Sugar is sweet, spice is nice

a deliciously wonderful surprise

Crunchy pretzels, take a bite

My favorite Valentine delight.

IMG_1566The Organic Cacao Goji Energy Bites are a combination of dates, sunflower seeds, raisins, cacao powder, apricots, sesame seeds, coconut, goji powder and natural flavors. They are dense and sweet, a perfect snack for a day out on the trails. Although not as tasty as the rest of the bunch, in comparison to typical trail bars, I would take these any day. I enjoyed the enclosed Cacao Goji Haiku:

Cacao Goji Love

So Nutritious, Tasty, and Filling

Quickly Empty

These snacks were absolutely delicious. As an extra bonus, they’re produced with many organic ingredients and all of them are 100% GMO free. Although available in stores in the mid-Atlantic region, they are not available near me outside of their website. While you could purchase the packages individually, subscribing month to month will afford a small discount over individual bag purchases. Prepaying for a longer subscription will offer even more savings. If you like delicious homemade snacks made from whole food, GMO-free (and lots of organic) ingredients, this subscription is for you.
