bookcase club strange worlds february 2016 box

BookCase.Club is a monthly book subscription box. Ever month you’ll receive two handpicked books in one of six genres. (For the children’s picture book box you’ll get four books!). This is an inexpensive book subscription – less than $15 including shipping per month!

When you sign up you’ll pick the genre. I selected Strange Worlds, because I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels!

This is a pretty hefty size box with two full-sized books in it.

A Happy Valentine’s Day card with handwritten note accompanied the books along with short blurbs about each.

Red Moon by Benjamin Percy ($14.75) Ooooh Lycans! This wasn’t 100% what I expected from this box, but I love a good supernatural tale. A big story with a lot of nuance, it seemed a little weighed down by the writing in many places (weird present tense).

“A werewolf epic. Can’t stop thinking about it.”–Stephen King

They live among us.

They are our neighbors, our mothers, our lovers.

They change.

When government agents kick down Claire Forrester’s front door and murder her parents, Claire realizes just how different she is.

Patrick Gamble was nothing special until the day he got on a plane and hours later stepped off it, the only passenger left alive, a hero.

Chase Williams has sworn to protect the people of the United States from the menace in their midst, but he is becoming the very thing he has promised to destroy.

So far, the threat has been controlled by laws and violence and drugs. But the night of the red moon is coming, when an unrecognizable world will emerge…and the battle for humanity will begin.

The Thousand Names by Django Wexler (Book One of The Shadow Campaigns) ($2.92) This one was a remaindered hardcover (has black mark on the edge) and is sold in paperback for $7.99. I preferred the character development in this book to the first and I liked the military fantasy setting (often called flintlock fantasy).

Captain Marcus d’Ivoire, commander of one of the Vordanai empire’s colonial garrisons, was serving out his days in a sleepy, remote outpost—until a rebellion left him in charge of a demoralized force clinging to a small fortress at the edge of the desert.

To flee from her past, Winter Ihernglass masqueraded as a man and enlisted as a ranker in the Vordanai Colonials, hoping only to avoid notice. But when chance sees her promoted to command, she must lead her men into battle against impossible odds.

Their fate depends on Colonel Janus bet Vhalnich. Under his command, Marcus and Winter feel the tide turning and their allegiance being tested. For Janus’s ambitions extend beyond the battlefield and into the realm of the supernatural—a realm with the power to reshape the known world and change the lives of everyone in its path.

The books I received weren’t quite what I was expecting from my box (the picture shows Seveneves so I was gunning for some great fantastical Sci-Fi) but I’m a fantasy fan too, so the books worked for me because I love reading long involved epic novels. The value of the books in my box was $17.67 – slightly more than the monthly price of my subscription – and I honestly thought that was pretty good. Instead of selecting from a wide open swath of new books that aren’t necessarily in a particular genre I got 2 deep cuts in my preferred genre that I hadn’t seen before. The biggest hurdle for me in sitting down to read is the selection and I’m more than happy to have someone else do it for me!

This looks awesome! Can you change from month to month? I am not sure how I could possibly make up my mind between genres!
Also, are there any coupon codes to try it out?
    Thanks 🙂

Yes you can! I need to add that – not at my desk. The coupon should be on the review at the end (replying from wordpress app, sorry!).
