Hatchery is a gourmet food sampling subscription box. For $20 per month including shipping you’ll get 5-6 sample sizes of artisan-produced small-batch foods, which you can buy in the shop. I like the idea of small-batch foods and obviously they are hard to find if they don’t have any sort of distribution deal, so this is a neat box! Items may include spreads, condiments, jams, honeys, syrups, cooking sauces, oils, vinegars, salts, spices, seasonings, baking ingredients and cocktail mixers.
The packaging for this box is simple and beautiful.
Everything is so cute in this box!
A fold-out information card details each maker and the included product. The card notes what the item pairs well with, the name of the chef inspired recipe (see them here), and the qualities of the product, included whether it is all natural, non-GMO, gluten free, kosher, vegetarian, and vegan.
There’s also one recipe included right in the box.
South Boulder Sauce – All Things Orange ($2.7 – based on guess of 1.5oz bottle) A carrot, gold beet, pumpkin, and habanero hot sauce. I know where this is going – nothing fancy needed – NACHOS! It’s tasty and relatively thin, which is good, so you can load on the flavor!
Chi-Cho Sauce ($2.66) This is a lightly sweet and garlicky sauce with some jalapeno heat. It can be used as a marinade or a sauce, however you’d like! I really love the flavor of this – I can see why they’ve devoted an entire company to just this sauce!
Fourth Creek Food Co. Sweet Red Pepper Relish ($1.75 – guess at 3oz size – I’ll be washing some jars out and measuring them for next go round!) Roasted but not fire-roasted, and just the right mix of sweet and vinegar.
Laura Ann’s Jams Strawberry Vanilla Bean ($2.25) Locally grown strawberries and organic Madagascar vanilla beans – this jam is superlative and decadent. I’m going to mix it with some yogurt, because the vanilla is extremely powerful!
Laguna Salt Company Summer Smoke Handcrafted Sea Salt ($2.50) Naturally smoked using a variety of woods – this will add really amazing depth and flavor to anything you dress with it!
Also included were some Tattly tattoos!
This box had a value of about $12, which is about on par with my previous experiences with this subscription. While I’ll certainly enjoy it, I think that (along with the nice packaging) puts it into the nice gift category, not the subscribe for yourself category (I write this as I’m drizzling the Chi-Cho sauce into my mouth, which is really quite good, but we love hot sauce around here!). I do think all the weensy bottles are adorable and the quality of the products is top notch!
