Keep your New Year Resolution chugging along full steam by adding some power to your salads. The January 2016 Hamptons Lane theme is “Power Bowls.” Every month Hamptons Lane selects a gourmet food theme and builds a box of equipment, recipes, ingredients, and other goodies to help you actually carry it out in the kitchen. You get the equipment, the guidance, and some tasty gourmet accompaniments too! Hamptons Lane is one of the subscriptions where you can preview the theme before you’re locked in for the month, which is always excellent, so you can subscribe and skip any months you don’t love.
As always, it has all the great components of a Hamptons Lane box: high-end kitchen implements, some choice gourmet ingredients, and a bunch of recipes to get you started.
Everything in the January box.
The information booklet was updated a few months and we love the booklet form – it’s sturdier and great to keep the recipes!
The curator’s note gives some insight on the choices for this box. At least one recipe is included that showcases each food item in the box.
Usually, you can find a few more recipes on the Hamptons Lane site. This month, as seen a couple pics down, they went big! Of course, there is complete information on every item included in the box, as well.
The booklet gave mix and match ideas for your power bowls — the concept is to construct a mix of ingredients that is filling, but not heavy, uses high-quality nutrients instead of junk. The power bowl replacing wimpy salads with an all-in-one feast that combines wonderful textures and flavors with lasting energy.
And 30 days of power bowls recipes are available (soon, this box was early, I’ll update with info about the recipes).
14cm Airtight Stainless Steel Food Container from Onyx ($22 – capacity is 4.75 cups!): This gorgeous container is absolutely huge, with plenty of room for a bowl for two, if needed. It uses space very efficiently, and is even stackable.
The inside is slightly contoured, but really easy to clean. It is very light, with a hermetic seal.
The locking mechanism uses the lid tension as a spring to hold itself shut, creating a very secure seal when both are engaged. It is similar to trunk and toolbox latches, but made elegant.
Dia Del Perro Medium Lightly Smoked Pepper Sauce from Lucky Dog ($10.99): Power bowls have bolder ingredients than salads, so they require a bolder dressing. This flavorful sauce has a subtle smokiness and controlled heat that can liven up food without killing it. Also a superb addition to dressings and sauces.
Chile Margarita Rub from Spiceologist ($11.95): A great Mexican-style rub for meats, fish, veggies, or anything.
The spices are ground slightly course, so they combine well with the sugar to create a nice crust or bark when slow roasted. A bit different than typical Mexican seasonings, this blend skips oregano and cilantro, adding lemon and orange zest, instead. This switch makes the rub, and everything it touches, less likely to clash with dressings — a perfect preparation for the protein portion of your power bowl.
Silicone Portable Salad Dressing-To-Go Container from Evriholder ($3.90): The snap-top lid allows easy serving from this silicone container. It holds a big 2 oz of dressing or sauce, enough to smother the most generous bowl.
Minnesota Grown Wild Rice from Northbay Trading Co. ($3.90): Naturally whole grain and gluten free, this rice has a beautiful color and a much firmer texture than even brown rice. The rich taste and comforting bite make this a perfect way to add some chew to your bowls.
Organic Farro from Nuts.com ($3): Farro is an ancient grain with a superb nutty taste and an indomitable texture. I love it as substitute for barley in soups or as a base for Mediterranean pasta or grain salads.
This was a quite useful Hamptons Lane. All their boxes feature practical kitchen items that are high on beauty and function, but often they are reserved for special occasions — for example, homemade pasta is not an everyday meal. This box, however, has wonderful everyday use potential, and it is particularly useful for this resolution-laden time of year.
