December’s Doodle Crate was a Screen Printed Backpack! Doodle Crate is one of the latest additions to the KiwiCo family. Geared toward kids 9+, it inspires young makers to learn new skills and gain creative confidence through craft and art projects. This box is also excellent for anyone wanting a craft subscription (even adults). It’s not just another craft project every month – it’s a whole new technique. In my experience, this is the best “arts and crafts” box for older kids, tweens, teens, and adults. It’s also not just for girls – it’s gender neutral and boys love it too.
The box includes an information booklet that gives a great overview of the technique to be learned — this month’s technique is screenprinting.
It comes with everything you need to complete the project, except for a few basic items from your home (we needed tape this month, so we grabbed some washi).
Every crate comes with a booklet — they recently updated the format from a fold-out pamphlet to a true, [staple] bound booklet. The booklet has some great background info on the history and evolution of screenprinting and how its used. The informative sections are similar in educational content to a middle school textbook. Doodle Crate is great at giving some perspective and inspiration for their projects.
The instructions are clear and easy to follow and broken down step by step, and my daughter reads every step before we begin.
Extension ideas are included with the instructions when there is room (it depends on the project).
In addition to the screenprinting tools, several stencils were included.
We’ve noticed on several of the more involved techniques that a mini-project has been included for practice – we love this, because it ensures that your final project is something you’ll want to keep. Our daughter tested it out with the cherries stencil!
Then we moved onto the real thing. Dad helped with an extra stencil, because our daughter wanted to make the bag for her brother (which was super sweet). He picked the dog, the headphones are a symbol for Minecraft (he likes to wear his headphones and watch Stampy videos on Youtube), and dad made the E.
We thought the result was fantastic! As always, my daughter loves learning a new technique, and we thought it was so sweet that she wanted to share this project with her brother. We think that the resulting projects are keepable, giftable, and high quality, and that the techniques are appropriate and well-suited for the 9-16+ target age range.
