bocandy december 2015 boxBocandy is a a monthly candy & snack subscription sending 7-10 different types of candy from around the world straight to your door!   Don’t look for a cohesive theme (though the info card will occasionally wax philosophical) — Bocandy tends to be a grab bag of candy favorites.

The info sheet has some background on each item, as well as the country of origin.  This box had selections primarily from Bulgaria and Japan, with an item each from Scotland and Mexico.

Everything in the December Box!  The box is fairly petite, but it arrives full to the top with treats.   There is usually a mix of candy bars and confections.

Tunnock’s Milk Chocolate Coated Caramel Wafer Biscuits (Scotland): More than five million of these biscuits made and sold every week. 5 wafer layers, 4 caramel layers, all covered in chocolate.  Sweet and tasty, the caramel gives the bar a nice bendy resilience when served at a cool temp, making it both crisp and chewy.

The use of the caramel as a layering agent gives these wafers a unique texture — unlike cream-filled wafers, Tunnock’s are chhewy and dense, with a great bendy texture.  Mild and sweet, they are delightfully satisfying.  While the branding is the same as always, the wrapper has changed recently from a simple folding wrapper to a crimped and sealed candy-bar style pouch wrapper.

de la Rosa Paleta Chocolate Covered Marshmallow Lollipop (Bonus Candy from Mexico):  this lollipop is a big, gooey marshmallow puff coated with a thin chocolate flavored icing.  The icing has a bit of a crispness to it, adding a unique textural element.

Nestle Trio (Bulgaria):  Bo continues his love affair with Bulgarian candy.  Trio has a nice biscuit coated with a thick layer of hazelnut cream.  Segmented into rectangles for easy portioning, the bar is enrobed in a thick layer of good quality nestle milk chocolate.

Meiji Osushiyasan Gummy (Japan):  Clean, bright fruit flavors make these tender gummies a fun treat.  You get the “rice” gummies and the “fish” gummies and mix and match them to make sushi! I love the DIY candy kits! These are peach, lemon, and banana flavors.

Nerriccho Soft Serve (Japan) With this simple DIY you mix up the powder and water and spoon it into the sugar cups for a tasty “ice cream” treat!  When mixed up, the powder foams a bit, and it has a tangy flavor a bit like a Zotz or similar foaming candy.  As long as you don’t add too much water, it scoops nicely into the little cones.  How cute!bocandy december 2015 IMG_3401

One of the fun parts of modern-style Japanese candy is looking at the wrappers.  These had small export labels in English, but you could still see the cover art and the cool graphic instructions.

Two rows of “fish” and a row of cloudy “rice” for making your own sushi creations.  Japanese snacks sometimes sneak some fishy flavors in where you least expect it — thankfully, this “sushi” is absolutely fishy-taste-free!

Hyper Bar (Bulgaria):  Bo has been on a tear with the Bulgarian candy — he must have a great supplier.  Like others in the past, this is a wafer bar from Prestige.  Surprisingly, each wafer we’ve tried has been different from those preceding it.  This one has an English wrapper, which tells me it was intended for export westward.  It also has a bit more western appeal — the coating is less melty than previous bars, and the chocolate coating and cream have a pretty straightforward (not ultra dark) flavor.

Bocandy is a good all-around candy subscription.  In the warmer months, it features alot of hard candies, with chocolate appearing more in the winter.  We never know exactly what we’ll get, and each box usually has something from a few different continents.
