Craftmark Handwoven Wool Indigo Scarf from Himalayan Weavers ($45) Now that I’m older I keep my hair cut shorter. Most of my life my hair was at or past my shoulders and I’ve noticed that my neck gets cold in the cooler months since I’ve gone to a shorter hair style. I honestly can’t say colder months because I live in northwest Florida and it really doesn’t get cold compared to some of the northern climes. Anyhow, back to my neck, I’m really appreciating a great scarf to wear with my shorter hair style. This month’s scarf is a beautiful blue wool handmade with natural Indigo dye and of a longer length than they typically make! The scarf was made by Himalayan Weavers, an eco-friendly business built on fair trade principles.
Included are two surprises: the first one that you can’t help but notice is the Divine Chocolate Bar ($2) from the makers of Divine Chocolate of Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana. It’s 70% dark chocolate, ohhhhh, it’s so good. I learned that you shouldn’t bite into dark chocolate but rather place a piece on your tongue and let it melt and just savor the flavor. Divine is a Ghanian farmer co-op with 85,000 farmer members.
The second surprise is a hand painted light olive candle from Nobuntu in Napier, South Africa ($6). In the winter months with it getting dark so early I use a lot of candles. Its just kind of soothing. Their candles are made with natural wicks and non-toxic pigments.
Supporting fair trade, culture and global responsibility does have it’s advantages and receiving these well made products is one of them. The items in my Flourish Box totaled about $53 and everything inside provided employment and support for global artisans – I love that our purchasing choices can make a difference. It is a nice bonus that the items are socially and ecologically responsible too! I especially love Divine’s projects helping women and girls in Ghana succeed.
