Sprouting Threads is a subscription styling service for kids about ages 2 to 8 — each box has several outfits to try on for fit and style in your own home, sparing the arduous trial that is clothes shopping with kids. You set your kid’s profile online (sizing, etc), and the clothes arrive for your child to try on. Sprouting Threads generates a detailed style profile for your child based on images of clothing that you can say you love, like, or don’t like. When you receive your box, keep what you want and return the rest. There is a $20 styling fee that can be credited toward a purchase of two or more new items. It’s like Stitch Fix for kids! This box is for our 5 year old son, who is skinny! We gave Sprouting Threads his sizing info when we signed up and filled out his child’s style profile.
We love the way everything comes packaged in this subscription! Everything is folded (and matched, if you need help with outfits). Sometimes the matches are really obvious (like the stitching on the pants matches the unique color of the shirt), but usually you can mix-and-match most sets to make even more combos!
The items in this box are all higher-end boutique brands. You can choose to get half reThreads (gently worn clothing). We got six tops and four bottoms (five outfits, with a pair of pants pulling double duty) to try on.
Wes and Willy Skull Tee ($23.50)
Joah Love Houndstooth Pants ($48)
This is the super relaxed outfit and we love the pattern on these knit pants! It’s fun but a bit understated, and of course pirate anything rocks!
The pirate theme was a big hit with our model! I think we will see a lot of use out of this shirt and pants both!
This outfit made for nice loungewear. The material is like sweatpants, but the pockets give a more trouser-like appearance, so he could wear these with nearly any style top and be OK.
Tooby Doo Antler Shirt ($35)
Tea Collection Corduroy Playwear Pants ($22) This set is a little more dressy, due to the corduroy pants. I love the graphic on the shirt — he was actually a little wary of the realism at first, but he warmed to it when I described it as a Native American symbol.
This shirt was really cool, and the pants are super versatile.
Andy and Evan Bicycle Button Down ($39.90)
Deux par Deux Call Me Mister Sweater Vest ($40)
Mini Shatsu Herringbone Tweed Pants ($48)
This is the dressy ensemble. The sweater vest doesn’t really stand on its own (the sweater vest tank is not yet a thing, thankfully), but it is a really intricate piece that would be served well by even just a plain T-shirt. We loved the interplay of the different textures and patterns – and it keeps it interesting and fun for a soon-to-be-five little dude.
We found the shirt and pants to work well worn as a casual ensemble.
The pants proved quite versatile, and they had some really great detail and interest. We tucked the shirt mainly so we wouldn’t hide the cool panelling on the pants. These definitely ran big – they’re a 4T, and Sprouting Threads did a great job by not sending the 5T!
The complete ensemble is super-cute. This would work for most dressy occasions, but its still really fun. If you used a standard dress shirt (in white or garnet/burgundy) you could turn this into a ring-bearer worthy outfit.
Joules Rugby Shirt ($38)
Wes and Willy Twill Jogger Pants ($38)
Tooby Doo Button Down Jean Shirt ($42)
The last ensemble was a semi-casual game-day outfit perfect for mixing and matching.
The pants are a little blousey, so they have a relaxed feel. The fit reminds me of Bugle Boy. They work really well with the rugby shirt and a pair of pants with elastic always comes in handy. The shirt itself is a really nice heavyweight and a 3T-4T.
I snapped this because the tag looked like the Five Four flag.
He looks like General Montgomery with the shirt at full tuck. The distressed shirt has a nice Southwestern feel to it.
The pants have red thread accents on portions of the stitching.
There’s also information on the reThread service in every box, including the brands they accept. Great idea – and we hear it’s super popular. Dealing with consignment is a pain, so this is a really easy way to get some value out of your gently used clothes, and you can request that part of your box is reThreaded too!
We’ve been thoroughly impressed with our Sprouting Threads outfits. We think they are pretty cute, but more important, our kids like them and actually wear the clothes. The pieces come pre-matched in suggested outfits, but they are versatile. In this box, for example, the pants from the first and second outfits could easily swap places, and the pants from the second an third outfits could be swapped as well. When you add items from your existing wardrobe, the options are astounding. The quality of the clothes is great, and the ReThread service is an excellent hedge for quickly-growing kids. We love not having to go to the store to shop for our kids or even think about outfits – this service is awesome for busy parents.
