The theme for November was Autumn Loaf Cake!
The box included a card letting you know the ingredients needed, tools, baking time, quantity, etc. I liked that it broke down the ingredients you need twice (the second time being what you need at home).
The instructions. They are step by step with a photo for each step.
Crafting tips for creating the decoration on the top of the cake.
The ingredients list (hint, the list is very short – you can click on the photo to see it up close).
Leaf Stencils
Paintbrush
Disposable Baking Pan
Foodstirs cloth bag with baking mix
Foodstirs Organic Vanilla Frosting Mix ($7.95)
Foodstirs Vanilla Cupcake Mix ($7.95)
Color Garden Orange Food Coloring Packet ($2) Natural pre-mixed food coloring!
We had a great time mixing this up together in the kitchen! The directions were easy to follow – we melted butter, beat it with an egg, and mixed it with yogurt and the mix, alternating the two. This was a bit fussy but it was fine.
Unfortunately the cake was nowhere near done in the recommended amount of time (15-17 minutes). It took twice as long, and eventually I stopped counting how many extra minutes.
Eventually it did cook without burning, and we mixed up the frosting mix with yogurt and spread it on. We didn’t place the frosted cake in the freezer for the recommended 30 minutes.
We then used the stencils and painted on the included natural orange food coloring.
It looks like a pinterest fail, but it was definitely tasty and moist.
This cake lasted about 4 hours for my crew plus guests, and it was gone in a flash. It was overall easy, but could have been simpler and turned out a little nicer (maybe if I had frozen it, but that really wasn’t in my kids’ plans for eating the cake immediately).
A note about value: This month was a lot better than last month. The value of the food mixes and coloring was about $18, plus I received the leaf stencils and the disposable baking pan. The total value is about $20, which is the cost of the box, but you also have to pay shipping. For a box like this it would be much more attractive to have free shipping.
You can get a coupon for this box, but it’s by email, so if you’d like one, enter your information in this form, which we will enter in the Foodstirs site, and they’ll send you one.
