Five Four Club November 2015 boxThis Five Four Club mailing represents the third and final installment of this year’s Fall collection.  Five Four Club is a men’s clothing monthly subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.”  This subscription ships at the end of the month.

The subscription is a $60 flat monthly fee, and traditionally we’ve received a variable number of items each month, depending on the value of the month’s selections (months with several items usually include a tee shirt or other lower value item).

Two months ago, the bag contained a card with the clothes noting that each season will have three volumes of wardrobe.  Five Four Club will now present more complete outfits through each season.  Since the commencement of the new wardrobe series, my shipments have had two items apiece — I’m not sure if this is the standard going forward, or if it merely reflects the value-balance of the selections.

For reference: Month 1 was a light swearer and a Mark McNairy shirt.

And last month – Month 2:  a moderate-weight jacket and a scarf.

And for this month – Month 3:  A cardigan and sport shirt.

Five Four Club November 2015 review

So far for the season I received a sweater, a shirt, a jacket, and a scarf. Plus another shirt and a cardigan.

I’ve been very aware of the evolving effort by Five Four to establish distinct and recognizable branding.  This month, they included some stickers, patterned like their tags, for use in proselytizing.

Galena Button Down:  I like the green of this shirt.  The tag calls the color “olive,” but it is not the yellowed and drab color I associate with that name.  It is closer to a deep Kelly or a Forest green.  It has a wine and blue window pane pattern.

Wiley Cardigan:  A soft, comfy cardigan in a nice navy blue.

Ribbing adorns the cuffs, waist, collar, and front panel.  The calico buttons give it a professorial and relaxed feel.

The interior of the lapel has a bright blue.  This color is unseen when the cardigan is fully-buttoned, but it adds a pop of color an sets off any shirt worn underneath when the cardigan is left unbuttoned or partially open.

The cardigan has a free-flowing and loose fit to it — great for Fall layering.

The distinctive branding appears either below the rear of the collar, or along the side seam.

Five Four Club has always provided a variety of pieces across each season, so I suspect the relaunch is primarily an exercise in branding and communication of mission.  So far, we have received a light sweater, two shirts, a jacket, scarf, and cardigan.  Great choices for the season, but I am a bit surprised no pants made it into the Fall collection.

You really should point out – clearly – that with Five Four Club you are stuck with whatever they send you that you simply don’t like and will never wear. That’s a HUGE distinction between them and many, many online retailers which typically provide FREE returns and exchanges. Five Four Club only permits exchanging the same item for another size, so if you absolutely hate it – or if the size is correct, but the cut is simply terrible for your particular body shape…TOUGH. You’re stuck with it. I buy lots of things online, including clothing, and it’s rare that you even have to pay for the return/exchange postage, let alone that you’re stuck with whatever they send you – and that’s even when you picked it out yourself.
