Meal Time Box is bi-weekly (or monthly, at your option) subscription box that delivers healthy, fresh prepared meals ready to heat and eat.
The meals are made of real, cooked food, so they are perishable and need to be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or in the freezer if they are to be eaten later.
The box has simple heating instructions. The meals can be cooked in the microwave, or boiled in their bags. You can thaw them — the preferred method — or heat straight from the freezer.
Ice packs and an insulated bag kept the food cold en route to us.
Our pack contained two meals each of five meals. Each had a protein (meat or fish), some veggies, and a nice starch or grain.
The info sheet describing the meals and giving heating instructions.
Chicken Roulade: This rolled chicken thigh was stuffed with asparagus and apricot, and accompanied by autumn hash, featuring squash and potatoes. The chicken was absolutely delightful, with excellent tenderness and moistness. The hash was very tasty, but it was the saltiest of the sides we had.
Moroccan Chicken Quinoa: The chicken thigh was perfectly cooked to our taste, and the dish had a wonderful, light North African seasoning. The quinoa reheated well, and the chickpeas, squash, carrots, and zucchini were tasty, authentic choices for the veggie accompaniment.
Lemon-Garlic Tilapia: The capers added a sophisticated flavor to the dish. The fish was tender and very flavorful, and the broccoli had wonderful roasted flavor. The rice had a nice seasoning, like a mirin sauce.
Roast Pork: The pork was incredibly tender and was seasoned with fennel seeds and rosemary. The potatoes were delicious and tender, as was the roast fennel.
Steak and Onions: We let this one partially thaw. Because it was still partially frozen, we heated for 3:00 (splitting the difference between frozen and thawed times).
The result was fantastic. The beef was very tender, and it had a smoky, grilled taste. The rice and beans had a pleasant aroma and seasoning, and the texture was very good. They wisely used short grain rice, so it survived freezing and reheating without turning to mush.
With a little finesse, I was able to plate the dish straight from the bag — The appearance is not perfectly neat, but the taste was really good.
We really enjoyed all the meals. It was real food, prepared nicely, and super-easy to reheat. All the dishes and component ingredients fared well with both freezing and reheating. The flavors were also very great — everything was seasoned gently and had a mild flavor, making them suitable for a wide range of palates. The servings were plentiful, too — we were able to split each of the meals into two modest, but satisfying meals. We loved that you didn’t have to add anything to the meals. The only thing we did add was some sour cream and hot sauce to the last meal!
This subscription would be perfect for busy singles or couples, newly independent twenty-somethings just starting to find their way around a kitchen, or especially older singles or widowers who might not otherwise bother with a hot meal every day.
