When I was growing up, our tree was always loaded with homemade plaster and clay ornaments. We don’t have as many on our tree now, because they are really messy to make. This kit is great — it’s a very neat way to make this type of ornament, and I don’t have to feel like we are derelict in collecting homemade memories for our tree!
Everything in the Crate. The cookie cutters and letter stamps are reusable, too, so those will be additions to our baking and crafts kits!
As always, the instructions lead nothing to chance. Kiwi Crate is great about taking you through step by step and tailoring difficulty of projects so they are appropriate for the target age.
The tools for shaping your ornaments and punching the hole by which you will hang them.
The label speaks truth — this clay is extremely light (even moreso when dry), which means they ornaments will hang better and be less likely to fall or break. The clay is key in making this project neat and simple — the self-drying clay is very easy to work with and doesn’t transfer or smear surfaces. Plus, obviously, no need for a kiln!
The decorative elements. Gold and silvery paint are for decorating the ornaments, and festive ribbon is provided to hang them.
The clay is super-easy to work with. We did use a mini rolling pin to get a degree of uniformity, but hands worked quite well too.
The stamps had both letter and some decorative shapes. This type of stamp was great for kids to use, as it didn’t require affixing the type to a stamp — they could be used individually by hand.
Even the light touch of the kids rendered legible ornaments.
The finished ornaments. They turned out really cute, with a lot of character (which is the whole point). They are really light, so they should survive year to year in both storage and annual handling. Limiting the color scheme to two paints worked well — all the ornaments go together as a set, and they have a nice, neutral palette that will complement most decorative schemes.
