The GHOST team is nothing if not modest.

The Autumn pack has some great, warm flavors to celebrate the cooler weather and hearty dishes that come with it.  The card that comes in the box tells you which spice blends you received, and it offers some suggestions on dishes that will likely render yummy results.  We received Pumpkin Pie Spice, Chinook Chicken & Veg Rub, and Asian Five Spice.

The packs are fairly large — they are big enough to each season several different recipes, but they aren’t into the “how am I going to use up all of this” territory.

The Pumpkin Pie Spice and Asian Five Spice were finely ground, making them perfect for baking, or adding to marinades or sauces.  The Chinook rub was chunkier, with flakes of garlic and red pepper dotting the herbs.

Pumpkin Pie Spice:  Warm and inviting, this blend has lots of cinnamon and a nice bit of nutmeg and possibly allspice.

Asian Five Spice:  The signature flavor of star anise leads the pack in this blend.  The clove is also nicely assertive, and I like that the cinnamon doesn’t overshadow the other elements.

Chinook Chicken & Veg Rub:  fragrant herbs make a nice base (think herbes de Provence sans the lavender that appears in American versions), but the strong aroma and taste of garlic and red bell pepper are the standouts.

We made pie! The seasoning was delicious – but FYI Trader Joe’s pie crusts are duds. We liked the seasoning of this – not too many cloves, which can interfere with the pumpkinness if the ratio is too high.

And, here’s a look at what this subscription sent in November:

I was impressed by the aroma, taste, and general quality of the spices.  Ghost Spice Supply has created some very pleasant, versatile, and well-balanced blends.  My one disappointment was with the level of information available for each blend.  Ingredients are not listed, and descriptions are not posted on their site.  Recipe ideas are provided, but the actual recipes are not available in the box or on the site, which is slightly dissonant with the stated mission of making cooking more accessible and building culinary confidence.  Including a recipe for each blend would further these goals – even if it was just a blog post on their site with recipes you could use the spices in.  Competitors tend to provide recipes or flesh out their subscriptions by adopting distinct themes.  If you have even modest confidence in the kitchen, however, Ghost Spice Supply spices will do justice to your favorite recipes.
