For the holidays Doodle Crate released a one-time box of a felted ornaments craft! Doodle Crate is one of the latest additions to the KiwiCo family. Geared toward kids 9+, it inspires young makers to learn new skills and gain creative confidence through craft and art projects. This box is also excellent for anyone wanting a craft subscription (even adults). It’s not just another craft project every month – it’s a whole new technique. In my experience, this is the best “arts and crafts” box for older kids, tweens, teens, and adults. Kiwi Crate has a whole line of subscriptions, plus awesome holiday crafts. The box includes an information booklet that gives a great overview of the technique to be learned – this is just like the regular monthly crate!
The instructions are clear and easy to follow and broken down step by step.
The instructions covered the three ornaments — Santa, Snowman, and Penguin — start to finish.
It comes with everything you need to complete the project (excepting a pair of scissors).
The materials that will form the main substance of the craft ornaments. The wool roving provided was enough to make at least a dozen ornaments like those we made (though we did use more white and black than the other colors). We saved our leftovers to make some fun projects later!
The felting pad, cookie cutter mold to get the initial shaping down, and glue to attach the ribbon.
The felting pen. The pen has three needles mounted inside, and three spares are provided in case you break any.
The booklet had greats tips on on the technique, making it worthwhile to study it before commencing.
The one thing not made clear in the instructions was the amount of felt to use. Given the amount provided for three ornaments, we used a bunch.
It takes a lot of patience to get the wool to pack down and adhere to the felt. We used less wool with each successive ornament, and we had an easier time using a little less.
Using less also made it easier to add wool to an existing patch of roving.
Once we got the hang of it, we were able to add more small details.
The wool was very easy to rework, too, allowing us to go back and fix or add to sections that needed some love.
We cut each ornament out in the shape of a star, leaving a slight border.
And then we attached the ribbons to the back with glue. You can see how much more easily and securely the thinner ornaments attached to the felt: the penguin (right) has far more strands sticking through the felt than the Santa (top).
The completed ornaments, ready for the tree! She was so proud and so were we!
We love the entire Kiwi Family of crates, but Doodle is the one best for older kids interested in crafting — it’s actual quite fun for adults looking for an entry-level craft that’s lots of fun! They have avoided gender branding the box, so it is great for crafty girls and boys alike.
