candy box october 2015 box

The aptly-named Candy Box is a monthly subscription that  delivers a variety of full-size candies and candy bars  directly to you.  The selection is a combination of popular brands, classics, and variations thereof.candy box october 2015 unboxing

The candy arrives bundled in tissue, but otherwise it is like receiving a crate of candy.

Everything in the box.  There are lots of full-size classics in here.

Whoppers:  Whoppers are the original malted milk ball, and they still set the standard.  Malted milk is one of my favorite treats (second only to white chocolate), and I’ve yet to find another brand that tops Whoppers.

Hershey’s Cookies’n’Cream:  It may be blasphemous to say it, but Hershey’s bars don’t really do much for me.  Thankfully, the C’n’C version brings a unique, white chocolate(ish) and Oreo(ish) goodness to the party.  These are a creamy, sweet indulgence.

Butterfinger:  Crunchy, supersweet peanut butter covered in chocolate.  There are plenty of candies with peanut butter, but Butterfinger’s texture sets it apart in the candy pantheon.

Wild Berry Skittles:  In 1989, Skittles suddenly expanded its catalogue of flavors to include Tropical and Wild Berry assortments.  Intense raspberry, cherry, and strawberry flavor this Wild Berry version of the crisp-then-chewy, sugary candy.

Large Smarties:  I have a plaque in my honor hanging at my former place of employ commemorating my record-setting consumption of 44 packs of smarties in 22 minutes (I believe those are the metrics).  Anyhow, these powdery and tangy-sweet crunchy candies are a classic — this role has huge candies (each is the diameter of a nickel and two and a half times the thickness!

[note from Brandy: I have no idea, and I am totally disgusted!!!]

Candy Necklace:  Why would anyone wear a sticky necklace?  Kids seem not to mind, and adults can appreciate the convenience of having your candy tied together in a neat stack.   The beads look like slightly smallish Froot Loops.

Blue RazzBerry Charms Blow Pop:  Blow Pops are the quintessential bubblegum-filled lollipop.  Candy Box was also kind enough to send the classic flavor, Blue Razzberry.  The intensely raspberry shell cracks with relative ease, a poor defense for the gooey bubblegum hiding within.

Bubble Yum Cotton Candy:  The package now sports a duck with a studded collar and a bull-ring, but the gum is still the classic texture.

Tropical DOTS:  Brandy loves DOTS above all others.  These firm, chewy gummies came in a Tropical assortment. She ate them immediately. The only evidence that they were in this box was the empty box on her desk.

SweeTarts Soft & Chewy Ropes:  These are not your parents’ SweeTarts.  The hard candy has been crossbred with a Redvine, resulting in a chewy tube with cherry punch flavored filling.

Sour Jelly Belly Jelly Beans:  Jelly Belly sets the standard for flavored jelly beans — this pack contains five of their best sour fruit flavors.

Nerds Peach and Wild Berry:  Nerds has featured a double-flavor box for as long as I can remember.  The best part is alternating flavors and experimenting with combining them in different ratios.

Chewy Lemonheads:  This is a peculiar evolution of the brand.  Lemon heads were always crunchy, with a slightly compressible coating that would give way to a firm bite before the candy shattered.  Oh, and they were lemon-flavored.  This box turns everything on its ear — These little guys are chewy and tropical flavored, each one having a center and coating flavor pairing (e.g. a peach coating covering a mango center).

efrutti Fried Eggs:  Peach-flavored and looks like a real little fried egg.

efrutti Pizza:  a gummy little pizza just how my son likes it — in an odd number of slices.

Slo Poke:  This octogenarian candy has a rich caramel flavor and an incredibly dense chew.

This box included 16 items for the $20 subscription price.  This works out to be $1.25 per item, including free shipping. I thought that was a pretty good deal, and to be honest, we loved eating every piece of candy in the box.  At first glance, I saw many familiar brandnames and assumed there was nothing very interesting in the box.  Upon closer inspection, I realized that there were some truly neat alternate flavors in the box — from the Tropical Dots, to the Chewy Tropical Lemonheads, to the SweetTarts Ropes, some of these traditional candies were anything but traditional.  There is nothing really outlandish in the box, but it was nice to get both large sizes of familiar staples, and some interesting varieties of other favorites.
