Artbotic [art-baht-ick or art-bo-tique?] grabs some of the best finds from the emerging art scene and ships them to you on a quarterly basis. Limited edition prints signed by the artist come complete with a certificate of authenticity, and the box includes some other fun goodies to help you make cool art of your own, or at least look cool trying. Not your grandma’s art!
Zac hand-packed our box — each item was wrapped in protective film and carefully nestled in the box.
For $65 a box ($60 for your first box, with coupon code), you get a lot of value. It’s hard to price limited edition works, but the prices for the art are consistent with what I would expect to see for signed, limited run prints at a brick and mortar art store. This latest box was particularly loaded, with three prints — and we were one of the boxes that was randomly selected to receive a bonus a original piece of art! Artbotic puts the total value at $206.50 ($241.50 for those receiving the bonus piece): three to three and a half times the subscription price!
Almost everything in the box. There is some valuable stuff tucked in that tube.
“Storm Trooper” by Nick Allen. This limited print of a pen and marker original is so cool! And it’s not like stormtroopers are hot right now…
“Money Roll” by OG and Fat Kat: This limited print is the handiwork of a dynamic duo from LA. This looks like something Jackson Pollock would carry around.
“Breaking Bad Script Print” by Bryan Costello. This limited print is simply awesome! It looks incredible and captures Bryan Cranston’s character perfectly.
Just as spectacular as the look of the piece is its composition — it is painstakingly constructed from a handwritten copy of the episode 1 script! Amazing!
A certificate of authenticity is provided for each print or original piece.
Bio cards also tell a bit about the artists behind each work.
We were one of the subscribers lucky enough (or “Luckey” enough?) to receive an original dollar bill art work by Michael Luckey. This series appears to be of favorite characters from the Simpsons, ours being Dr. Nick!
Marly McFly, who probably has his name subconsciously misspelled all the time, captures the spirit of his rebellious youth in this limited edition tee, which may also bring to mind another rebellious youth from pop culture.
Dr. Art Botic’s Old Fashioned Lock Pick Kit: A demo video on the Artbotic site shows how to use this (very cool) item, included as an homage to Mr. Robot.
Word Notebook: A handy pocket-sized composition book for storing your inspirations, doodles, or to-do lists.
Stickers! Includes stickers by Russian artists Natalya Platonov, exclusive 8-bit stickers from the September 1Up Box, the calling card sticker of OG and Fat Kat, and the Artbotic logo.
This is a truly unique subscription, and if anything, it is getting even better over time — there is more art and the value of the box is soaring to three times the subscription price! There are many subscriptions that offer home decor and craft items for decorating, but most are mass produced or found pieces. Artbotic provides actual art that you’ll want to mat and frame. The limited run concept is very cool. It works because they feature artists that are just starting to make a name for themselves — more established artists would fetch a huge price for a limited run of 100, or the number of prints would be so astronomical as to render each individual one valueless. With Artbotic, you get some fun (that’s the important part) REAL art that has the added conceit that it might, possible, accrete in value over time. I think they found a very justifiable price point, as well, given the number of limited run pieces included (and the decent quality of the add-in items, despite the relatively cheap value ascribed to them). Very cool.
