war foodie box october 2015 box

War Foodie is a monthly subscription box bringing American favorites to military and expat communities. This subscription solves the problem of remembering those care packages or just finding a place that will send high quality food items perfect for deployed service members to an APO/AE address. Just sign up and your favorite person will receive a box every month! War Foodie was founded by three current and former service members, and you can also donate a care package to those that are currently deployed.

This subscription is a bit unusual – you’ll select the type of item you want to receive and pay a flat rate per item ($7), plus shipping. Because the primary market is APO/AE (though War Foodie promises regular civilians will love the items too!) shipping is a flat rate of $15 per box due to the high cost of priority shipping to APO AE addresses, but we have tons of great coupons to reduce that cost for you.   The box arrived nicely packed to survive shipping.war foodie box october 2015 unboxiing

Items include specialty coffees and teas, beef jerky, hot sauce, sriracha, granola, peanut butter, BBQ sauce, and a surprise me item. All the choices are designed to be the kinds of wants that military members away from home (and perhaps not eating the tastiest food) are asking for.  This is not like sending Jif & Folgers. Rather, WarFoodie is all about sending premium artisinal products and you’ll get your money’s worth (without the work).

war foodie box october 2015 review

Everything in our War Foodie box for November.

WarFoodie Coffee: Guatemala Santa Isabel.  Coffee – good coffee – is a definite must have for service members. Although this bag may be slightly different than another roast, my husband’s had these beans before – they are two cultivars from the same farm: strong tannic head notes, and a chocolaty body that quickly develops into a juicy, sweet, peachy treat. The woody and chocolaty notes linger through the finish. A very pleasant and interesting cup.

You can get War Foodie coffee in either whole bean or medium-grind.

war foodie box october 2015 IMG_1248 We love the new packaging for the WarFoodie box – and that it’s all resealable.

war foodie box october 2015 IMG_1249 WarFoodie Tea: Ginger & Spice. I accidentally ate some of this tea last night and it was delicious. I thought it was a great idea to include the little scoop inside the muslin bag.  This is a green tea blend with ginger, rose hips, peppercorn, orange peel, and licorice root. I thought it was interesting and unusual that it is sweetened with stevia leaf! We use liquid stevia to sweeten all our beverages, so this is really perfect (and an ingenious way to make sure the cup is always sweet without so much sugar!).

war foodie box october 2015 IMG_1250 war foodie box october 2015 IMG_1251WarFoodie Hot Sauce – Scorpion. This is a bright and tangy hot sauce that packs some heat!! It really builds and is pleasantly hot but not searing (note that my husband and I are seasoned hot sauce eaters so this is from our perspective!).  Hot Sauce is something you can use to spice up bland or repetitious food while on deployment.  It’s a little thickened (naturally) so you don’t use too much. This is made with Moruga Scorpion Chile peppers, which are actually hotter than Ghost Chiles (and I honestly didn’t know that!).

By the way, when I was writing this review I totally dipped peanut butter in this hot sauce and it was so tasty!

war foodie box october 2015 IMG_1252 WarFoodie Granola – Nutty November: This is a great very lightly sweet blend with baby rolled oats and bran flakes as the base, along with a hearty helping of almonds, macadamias, coconut, wheat bran, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, puffed wheat, and other goodies, plus cinnamon and vanilla. It definitely has more of a nutty flavor than a sweet flavor, which is something that I really enjoyed!

War Foodie Peanut Butter – Valencia: This is a fantastic natural peanut butter that only contains freshly ground valencia peanuts and a little salt. You can see that it’s textured (no overly smooth stuff) and I do recommend storing it (like any natural peanut butter) upside down, if it lasts long enough to separate. It’s so good and the fact that it has no sweetener makes it even better, because you can make your own concoctions or eat it with something sweet, whatever you prefer.

This is a great box, and as we suspected they’ve found ways to reduce shipping costs through some excellent coupons (below), though we don’t think the shipping will deter anyone from selecting a “set and forget” care package for overseas servicemembers (because that’s just the cost of shipping the care package, period!).

  • Get 50% off shipping every month when you order in 6 month intervals. Use coupon code HOLIDAY6. Expires 11-20-2015

  • Get $5 off shipping every month, when you order in 3 month intervals. Use coupon code FALL3. Expires 11-20-2015

  • Free shipping on your first box! Use coupon code THANKSGIVING. Expires 11-20-2015

  • You’ll also get a free War Foodie shirt with a 3+ month subscription!

We love the changes they made to this subscription and we think that War Foodie subscribers (or gift recipients) would eagerly anticipate the new monthly varieties they’ll be getting. I grew up in a military family and my 82 year old grandfather still won’t eat things that remind him of the foods that he had to eat day-in and day-out while on deployments. It’s better now, but my cousins say still boring!

All November boxes  will include a pack of Chocolate Pumpkin Biscotti! Place orders by November 6 in order to get packages to recipients by Thanksgiving!
