OwlCrate got SPOOKY for October! Owl Crate is a monthly subscription books and bookish items box. Each OwlCrate will contain one new Young Adult novel, as well as 3-5 other bookish items all matched to a magical monthly theme.
The information card has brief information about each item. The October 2015 theme was SPOOKY.
The bottom of the box hoots “enjoy your adventure!”
Everything in the October OwlCrate!
Crafted Van Monster Magnetic Bookmarks ($9?) These are the cutest little magnetic bookmarks, and high quality, too!
NPW Sugar Skull Erasers ($5) These are fun, big, and bright!
Out of Print Edgar Allen Poe-ka Dot Canvas Pouch ($12) I loved this pouch and it was perfect for this box – including the old-style library checkout card tag!
Adventure Scents Scent Pack – Vampire’s Lair ($4) Well, these were interesting, but appropriate and macabre – this scent smells like blood and wine and dirt! Although I don’t think I would scent my home with them they would certainly lend themselves to an immersive reading experience! They have a Scent-O-Matic to help you find the right scents to match your favorite games, books, movies, TV shows, costumes, educational themes, and more!
The book is wrapped in plastic along with the monthly author’s letter. This month also included a poster of the book cover.
A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis ($12.63) I absolutely loved the book selection this month. I think this box does a great job selecting interesting young adult fiction choice with broad appeal but unusual themes – like this month’s asylum setting.
Mindy McGinnis, the acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, combines murder, madness, and mystery in a beautifully twisted gothic historical thriller perfect for fans of novels such as Asylum and The Diviners as well as television’s True Detective and American Horror Story.
Grace Mae is already familiar with madness when family secrets and the bulge in her belly send her to an insane asylum—but it is in the darkness that she finds a new lease on life. When a visiting doctor interested in criminal psychology recognizes Grace’s brilliant mind beneath her rage, he recruits her as his assistant. Continuing to operate under the cloak of madness at crime scenes allows her to gather clues from bystanders who believe her less than human. Now comfortable in an ethical asylum, Grace finds friends—and hope. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who will bring her shaky sanity and the demons in her past dangerously close to the surface.
The book poster, which is very arresting, plus the letter.
A closer peek at the letter. The author wrote about the inspiration for the book – a visit to the Athens Lunatic Asylum.
This was a really excellent box with unexpected choices – except the pouch which I suspected would be the item! The value was around $43. Subscriptions are open now for the November box (they are often sold out!) so check them out if you’re interested. The November theme is Myths & Legends!
