birchbox upgrade october 2015 box
Birchbox no longer offers an option for an extra $20 per month to get 2 full-size products in addition to your regular box – October was the last month!   Birchbox is normally $10 a month, plus you accumulate points after reviewing the items in your box! You’ll get 10 points per item reviewed, and 100 points are equal to $10 in the shop.

Number 4 Texture Styling Crème ($2.27) I love Number 4 products and although I cannot think of anything to do with a styling creme with my fine bobbed hair, I was still happy to see it.

Acure Organics Cell Stimulating Facial Mask ($7.42) I got a full size of this product the other month and it’s fun vegan mask with argan stem cells and chlorella growth factors. It is only a 10-15 minute mask, which I like.

Jane Iredale HandDrink Hand Cream ($3.43) To be honest there was nothing special about this hand cream except it does has an SPF. and it sort of smells like spa/bath products scented in the 80s. The back was weird. It said: Sample for evaluation of texture and aesthetic propterities only. Amount insufficient to provide stated SPF protection. And while this sample is on the smaller side if you’re using it on your hands there is more than plenty! Weird.

Eyeko Black Magic Mascara ($10.76) I don’t think I selected a sample on this account, because I wouldn’t have picked Eyeko – it ranks amongst my least favorite mascaras. The best thing about this for me personally was its high value. Birchbox sold out of samples way too fast this month.

CLEAN White Woods (97¢) This one didn’t have a sprayer top, so solely for the purposes of the blog I opened it (with my teeth of course), sniffed it, and discovered it’s another quite masculine scent. What’s up with that Birchbox? FYI – my husband got the same perfume as I did last month! I think perfume samples without sprayers are terrible – especially in a large commercial subscription like Birchbox.

I really didn’t think I’d say this, but thank goodness for my upgrade items to redeem this box.

Smith & Cult The Shining Lip Lacquer ($22) Everything about this is stunning. First of all, the name – The Shining – is funny! I like funny. The packaging is awesome and unlike the nail polish, it really works in this smaller form (I have small hands and had too much trouble with the polish so I ended up giving it away). And the color – Hi-Speed Sonnet – is a described as ripe melon pink and is so pretty and really works for me. This product is vegan, gluten- and paraben-free with coconut essences to moisturize. My only gripe is that the gloss could be a little glide-ier because I can feel the glitter on my lips, but it’s not sticky.

Lord & Berry Twistick ($24) The color is Shut Up! This is a sheer balm-like pencil that reminded me a lot of the Honest Beauty one I tried the other week.  Really pretty color, goes on well, color stayed for a good amount of time. Nothing to not like about this one!

My October 2015 upgrade Birchbox had $46 in the 2 upgrade items and about $24.85 in the rest of the box (lower than normal), for a total of about $71 (for a $30 purchase price). This was only ok to me. I honestly didn’t particularly enjoy the regular Birchbox items but I loved my two upgrade items. As always, I’m happy enough with the regular Birchbox even if I don’t love the items – they are usually worth a dollar to me (after points)!
To its credit, Birchbox did steadily improve (for the most part) the upgrade items, but the curation is outright weird. Why send two lip products? Why send full size mascaras multiple months in a row? I think Birchbox has something right with the new Love of Color line – all items are sized for the season and then you move on! But ultimately they need to put a box together that is just like the Men’s Box, because it would be awesome!
