It is HOT out there, but cold in here! Dressing for work this month has been a challenge. August is a slow travel month for me, which means lots of time in the office. I fall victim to the Southern office conundrum – it is 95 degrees and humid outside, but 68 degrees and freezing cold inside. I never know what to wear. I want to be cute, but I don’t want to freeze. I have chosen to be cute and sit with a sweater draped over my legs more times than I want to admit. All the better that I could be cute in something different every week, if I want to! This installment of Gwynnie Bee was a fun set of three dresses.
Gwynnie Bee is a clothing rental subscription service. My body shape makes me a perfect candidate, as they specialize in sizes 10-32, and I am a solid 16. I added about 25 items to my closet (it’s a lot like creating a Netflix queue back when DVD subscriptions were their main business model, except there is no specific order) and they sent me the first three that were available. When I return items, they send more!
I really like that I have a lot of control – I pick the specific items that are in my closet. I can go outside my comfort zone if I feel like it, or I can stay well within it. Overall, I put several items that would be a stretch for me in my closet, but also put plenty of items I think I will like so that any given shipment is likely to have something in it that I will wear.
I love bright colors and rainbows. When I was a kid, my thing to draw everywhere was rainbows. Some girls like horses, or butterflies, or princesses. I like diffracted light. Needless to say, this dress caught my eye, right away. I am not a huge fan of tank dresses – I always feel like they are a little plain, but the pattern was fun and I figured I could bring it all together with a cardigan and some colored shoes.
I have…um… a few cardigans. In a few colors. But I don’t have a green one. I need a green one. And, as for shoes, I have pink and coral and yellow and orange and more orange….
I originally ordered this in a 1X, based on the size adviser. It fit, but was larger than I usually want a dress to be. I recloseted in an XL and it showed up a few days later. I think the XL is the way to go. As a reminder, I am 5’10 and 215lbs, a 14/16 on top and a 16/18 on the bottom.
Verdict – wore it once for fun, but not a keeper.
Triste Blue Green Crosshatch Chelsea Dress
I may have been a little over ambitious with this one in terms of my comfort zone. I am trying to use Gwynnie Bee as a way to expand into patterns. Most of what I own is solid colors. They may be bright and odd, but they are solid. Patterns tend to feel trendy, and I am more of a classic wardrobe girl. But I want to look on trend, too, so this is a great way to have on trend items for a while but not be stuck with them later if they were just a little too on trend.
The size adviser told me to get a 1X(14-16) and it was spot on. The fabric is soft, stretchy, and forgiving. Length was a little too short for my taste, but not embarrassingly so.
Verdict: Despite my perfectly matched headband, I decided this was a no go. Sent back!
Igigi Lilah Dress in BlackCan you say “LBD?” I knew when I saw this on line it would be good for me. I like wide strapped but still sleeveless dresses. The material is stretchy and soft. There is a twist at the tummy that is just like my Elie Tahari dress that I consider one of my best buys ever. I really should have thrown on some shoes and jewelry (this dress is screaming for a statement necklace) for the pictures to do this justice – sorry about that!
Verdict: It’s not the most exciting dress, but it is a good standby. I plan to wear it out to a nice dinner next week!
Thanks again to Gwynnie Bee for the chance to try out new things with my existing wardrobe. As the weather cools, I plan to try out some more tops and sweaters. But not yet. Even in my frigid office, I can’t bear the thought of winter clothes yet.
