doodle crate august 2015 box

August’s Doodle Crate was Embroidered zipper pulls. Doodle Crate is one of the latest additions to the KiwiCo family. Geared toward kids 9+, it inspires young makers to learn new skills and gain creative confidence through craft and art projects. This box is also excellent for anyone wanting a craft subscription (even adults). It’s not just another craft project every month – it’s a whole new technique. In my experience, this is the best “arts and crafts” box for older kids, tweens, teens, and adults.

What a cute craft! I love how each kid can make it their own.

The box includes step-by-step instructions and everything you need to complete the project ( you may need very basic household supplies)

The information card details the techniques you’ll learn, the included supplies, and other typical household supplies you will need. In this case we needed scissors and a pencil (we used our estimation skills instead of measuring!).

The instructions are clear and easy to follow and broken down step by step.  Extension ideas are included with the instructions when there is room (it depends on the project). In this case the extension skill was a colonial knot.

There was an extra stitch guide on how to start and finish stitching as well as for the 3 basic stitches covered in the project. I liked how there was information for both right and left handers.

I was honestly nervous how this project would go – and I thought that my 6 year old wouldn’t be able to do the craft and that I would end up doing most of it. Again, this box is designed for 9+ year olds, but as always, if your child has interest in learning new craft techniques, they’ll put their mind to it! The box came with 2 foam plates for practicing. She made a heart with a circle around it with the running stitch and practiced some cross-stitches and double cross stitches too.

She went for a peace sign for her design instead of using the included templates.

And she did the whole thing herself! She said that the stitching was the easiest part! I was really proud of this! I thought it was impressive (and awesome motor skills practice – and good practice in patience, too!).

Grandma helped put it together.

She was extra proud of her work and her new zipper pull went right on her school backpack. We still have one more pull that she can make, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
