bombfell september 2015 bag Bombfell is a men’s clothing and personal styling subscription service. You get sent the clothing, can try it on at home, and then figure out what you love and want to purchase. It’s an excellent service for a busy guy.

Everything arrives neatly packaged. When shipped in a box, everything typically comes separately bagged to keep it nice. Every package comes with a return label.   The idea is you keep only what you love — usually you end up with 1-3 of the pieces (depending how many you order) finding a home in your closet.

This month I went for one “surprise me” item. I received the Grayers Shadow Gingham Long Sleeve Shirt. The price was $79.50 through Bombfell, but already cut to $47.70 by the manufacturer. This is the second shipment in a row that’s happened, and we can’t understand how they can have a going business like this. My feedback on the Grayers shirt I received last time was that it was available for half the price elsewhere, so I’m baffled why they sent me this one.

The shirt itself is nice.  It is a classic Italian restaurant checker pattern, but in a minty shade of green.  The styling seems a little retro to me, as I can recall having shirts very similar to this in the 90’s — slightly blousey fit, pleated forearms going into the cuff, faux-pearl buttons, plus the additional details on the back.bombfell september 2015 IMG_8373

The collar is button-down, with a very flaccid collar.  I think it is the type that you want to establish a nice even fold at the top of the collar, since one will set in eventually and may be uneven if left to develop unguided.

The back has yet more retro touches — the center pleat and tag being classic.  Personally, I don’t think the time is yet ripe to relive 90’s fashion.  In fairness to the shirt, it does incorporate a modern pattern and fabric sensibility, avoiding a dated look, despite the retro touches.

I am still mystified by the pricing issues.  I don’t love this shirt enough to keep it, and certainly not at this high above retail.

You mention that the shirt was 90s retro. You are not old enough but they were extremely popular in the 60s and 70s. That was part of our preppie look along with our Bass Weejuns here in the collegiate South.
