athletic foodie boxAthletic Foodie is monthly snack subscription box for athletes though you can have it shipped every other month (and save a few bucks by getting the larger box shipped every other month!).  Choose between the Complete Athlete, a selection of Athletic Foodie pre-, during-, & post-workout snacks, the Workout Warrior, pre-workout granola and post-workout trail mix, and Fruit Chew Mania, which consists only of during/post-workout energy chews.

This subscription features snacks designed by sports dietitians, with no added sugar, sulfur dioxide (hey that’s really cool!), no synthetic or artificial ingredients, preservatives or colors.  Looks like they’re all vegan, too.  The sheet tells you when to eat each: Granola, 30-60 minutes before working out; Chews: During a workout, between races, or within 30 minutes post-workout; and Trail Mix: within 30 minutes post-workout.

athletic foodie unboxing

Lots of snacks!  There are six different varieties (two kinds of pre-workout granola, two kinds of energy chews, and two kinds of trail mix), and we received two bags of each variety — 12 bags of snacks in the box!

athletic foodie nutrition

The box comes with a sheet of nutrition facts on every snack, the ingredients, and when it should be consumed for optimum performance.

Athletic Foodie Pre-Workout Granolas – Eat 30-60 minutes pre-workout

Both granolas have a base of rolled oats with honey, maple syrup, almonds, buckwheat groats, quinoa, coconut, canola oil, chia & sesame seeds, ground flax, plus sea salt, vanilla, and cinnamon.

Goji Moji: The granola base is sweetened up with dried blueberries and goji berries.

Apple Zapple: Dried apples and raisins add tangy sweetness and some chewy texture to the granola.

The granolas were my favorites!  Lightly sweetened with maple syrup, the granola has a firm crunch and chew with no rock hard bits.  The quinoa adds a nice bit of crispness, too.  They have a great oat flavor and the fruit is not overly sweet (the blueberries are sweetened with apple juice, all other fruit is unsweetened).

Athletic Foodie Energy Chews – Eat during workout or within 30 minutes post workout

These items are made with 95% real fruit juice concentrates, apple puree (strawberry) or banana (atomic orange), and pectin.

Atomic Orange:  Orange and lemon juice concentrates give it a bright and intense orange flavor.

Strawberry Spark:  Strawberry and Cherry juice concentrates provide a blast of sweet fruit flavor.

These little gems have a honey-like sweetness and are bursting with fruit flavor.  Sweetened with only fruit juice concentrate, they provide lots of natural sugar for fueling intense exercise.  One big bag is a serving for nutritional info purposes, but there are so many chews in each bag that they are probably best doled out over an extended period of activity — or each bag could provide a kid’s lunch treats for a whole week!

Athletic Foodie Post-Workout Trail Mixes – Eat within 30 minutes post-workout

Berry Strong: Made with raisins, cashews, sunflower seeds, dried apples, dried cherries, dried blueberries, almonds, dry-roasted pistachios, and sea salt.  Only the blueberries and cherries have a bit of apple juice concentrate added for sweetness.

MangCoco Crunch: Made with raisins, dried mango, cashews, goji berries, almonds, dried coconut, and sea salt.

Both trail mixes have a toned down sweetness, getting their great flavor from real dried fruit and nuts.  They make a great portion-controlled snack for athletes, busy folk, school kids, or couch potatoes.

Although this box is designed for the nutritional needs of athletes, it will also work for regular folks, including general fitness buffs, and also parents looking for super healthy snacks to feed their kids – it fits all our criteria for a healthy snack!  We were really impressed with the great flavor of the snacks — the granola and trail mix are a little less sweet than most commercial offerings, but the flavor was big.
