This was everything that arrived in our July 2015 Tinker Crate – the supplies, a fold-out instruction sheet, and the Tinker Zine.
For July, Tinkerers would be working on flight! The crate always comes with a cool blueprint-esque sheet with a schematic for the project, as well as step-by-step instructions. You can also get one on one help if your project isn’t turning out right.
I find the instructions clear and easy to follow. Tinker Crate also offers one-on-one help for kids (or parents/caregivers) that need it, plus extra tips and extension activities. Some projects can be fairly complex — this one was moderate difficulty.
The Tinker Zine this month. Each issue further explores the subject matter of the project and provides both in real-life perspective and extension projects for additional fun.
It has (fun) educational information plus extra experiments. The magazine explains the concept of the project using accessible and easy to understand diagrams. Our daughter reads the magazine cover to cover and we find that she has great retention of the information. The style is conversational while still being 100% accurate. There’s all sorts of goodies in here – read the whole thing!
The crate had three different flyers to assemble and use with the launcher. The flyers piece together and attach to the balsa frame underneath. Each flyer has thematically appropriate stickers to put on as decoration.
There were also several paper airplane templates — they were pre-marked with folding lines and had some great step-by-step instructions too! This was a really great bonus activity.
A little parental help is great for the more intricate folding, but the kids were really excited about his project and had a blast decorating and flying them, and actually assembled the piece together flyers themselves.
Mom and dad folded these – our children are much younger than the recommended age for this box, but they still love it – especially our oldest child.
There were supplies to make 2 flyers of your own, plus tons of tips on how to alter the flight patterns of each flyer.
The launcher is pretty easy to use (grimace of concentration optional).
Our kids love Tinker Crate, because the science is really accessible and always has a playful bent to it. The accompanying materials are well-written — the style is fun and engaging, encouraging further exploration and presenting science concepts as well as (or better than) most grade school textbooks.
