sprouting threads august 2015 box

Sprouting Threads is a subscription styling service for kids about ages 2 to 8 – just after they outgrow the baby ruin everything phase up until they stop letting you dress them.  You set your kid’s profile online (sizing, etc), and the clothes arrive for your child to try on.  Sprouting Threads generates a detailed style profile for your child based on images of clothing that you can say you love, like, or don’t like. When you receive your box, keep what you want and return the rest.  There is a $20 styling fee that can be credited toward a purchase of two or more items. It’s like Stitch Fix for kids!  We opted to subscribe for our 4 year old son – he’s very particular about his clothes, and specifically, has a large head and is somewhat skinny. We gave Sprouting Threads the info when we signed up.

We received five outfits to try on.  The tops and bottoms were pretty well paired, allowing us to create five nice matching outfits.  They were also great for mixing and matching.

We already do all of our kids’ clothes shopping online, and we cannot overstate the value of getting clothes to try on at home, at your child’s own pace.

Tea Collection Sabarang Striped Hoodie Tee ($29.50):  This top is styled like a hoodie, but tee shirt weight.  It features a front hand warmer pocket and light hood.  The main color is “Raincloud”, with orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple stripes. We love Tea Collection!

Toobyjeans by Toobydoo New York Straight Leg Wornout Color Jeans ($52):  Red pocket liners, gingerbread man outline on the leather brand tab, crossed double belt loops in the center back.  The latter two can be seen in the above pile-of-pants photo.  The jeans are washed to have a slightly worn look to them.

Catch a Tiger by Kickee Pants Slingshot Champ Tee ($18):  made from 95% bamboo viscose.  The 5% spandex makes it very stretchy — if available in a longer length, would make a great “baby tee” for a woman.  Looks very comfortable and is super light.

Zutano Terry Pants ($26):  Navy with intentionally visible orange stitching along all seams except the inseam and long seam down outside of leg.  Has a great sweatpant feel to them, but with a smooth and sleek look.

Danceable, too!

Appaman Bowling Shirt (invoiced as Harald Bowling Shirt) ($32.30):  Blue side panels lend a flattering shape.  “Stanton St. Motors” graphic adorns the chest.  This is a fun and relaxed button-up.

Tooby Doo New York Boy Shorts ($26.50):  These shorts are in a gorgeous blue and have a nice soft feel to them.  Great for athletic shorts or, as here, to soften up a button top.

Appaman Long-Sleeve Tee ($27):  the free-flowing horizontal stripe graphic has the look of a sunset.  The dark blue heather is really pretty too, but adds a bit more “boy” to the outfit.

Tea Collection ToughTwill Shorts ($32): Shown in Grenadine, these shorts really pop and bring out the colors in the top.  The khaki-like fabric would also make these great for pairing with a polo or jacket combo.

Joules T’s long sleeve tee ($34):  Sprouting Threads totally stole my go-to sunny weather look, as I personally made the long sleeves and shorts look fashionable. This Rugby-themed graphic tee has a large “The Good, The Bad, and The Rugby” graphic on the from, and a small Joules logo on the back.

Tea Collection French Terry Cargo Shorts ($26.50):  Shown in Forest, this super smooth French Terry bottom has button pockets on each leg.

We really loved the selection of clothes selected for us (and our little big guy) by Sprouting Threads.  The combo of long sleeves and shorts was a little unusual — though I have to confess to wearing that ensemble all the time, and it’s perfect for our weather.  The tops were cute and the graphics were not over-the-top like some mass market brands can be. This was a huge plus for us.  The bottoms looked very comfy and stylish.  I really liked that they selected items for us that had natural outfit pairings within the same shipment, but were also good for mixing and matching.

sprouting threads review

We were honestly impressed that everything fit our child – and fit really well! Most of his clothes are too big because of that noggin, but each piece was selected to fit nicely over his huge head and stay on his slim bottom half. Having someone help select the items was a real benefit – Brandy typically gets all the sizes wrong. When we signed up we did not choose to get any reThread clothes, so we want to check those out next for sure. Shopping consignment is honestly too much work for us, so we’re happy to try that too. This subscription was a hit for us. Not everyone would choose to pay the higher prices of boutique kids brands, but I think the reThread option would be good to help moderate the price of must-keep pieces.
