Plated sends is a weekly box of fresh and seasonal ingredients, pre-portioned for the recipes you choose from a weekly pre-set menu. I have been anxious to try out some of the meal boxes and Brandy was visiting this week, so she had Plated sent to us. She sent me the photos from the week’s menu and I picked out what I wanted to eat. Generally we do fish one day a week, vegetarian 3 days, and I cook for my kids and grandkids on the other days. Although I didn’t pick out vegetarian meals, I am hoping to find and stick with a vegetarian meal box to help expand our non-meat meal repertoire. I’m a busy grandma!

When your box is sent out you’ll get an email indicating the pantry items you’ll need (this week: black pepper kosher salt olive oil water) , plus a reminder of what meals are coming, preparation ease, cook time, and calorie count.

The box has Jute insulation. The outer plastic bag is recyclable and the jute is compostable. All the food comes in bags separated by recipe and all the meat is at the bottom of the box underneath the ice bags.

Everything was very cold when we received it and 4 large ice bags were used. We live in hot, sticky Gulf Coast weather and had no worries about eating the meat.

This made a giant plate of food and 3 of us ate only half of it. While we were cooking, Brandy also noted that this recipe must be at least a medium difficulty – there were a lot of parts to it. This was rated as difficult. I wouldn’t necessarily call it difficult, it just had a few different things to juggle. I chopped up all the herbs and veggies while Brandy made the sauce and roasted the vegetables. Then I made the couscous while the chicken marinated. We tossed the vegetables, tomatoes, and herbs with the couscous, sliced the chicken, and plated it with the sauce on top.

Seared Alaskan Salmon with Pesto and Summer Vegetable Panzanella ingredients Seared Alaskan Salmon with Pesto and Summer Vegetable Panzanella. Time: 40-50 minutes (novice) or 30-40 minutes (pro). Calories: 840. Easy.

I loved this salmon meal! It was easy to prepare, and didn’t create much mess so there wasn’t much cleanup. Toast the bread, toss it with the pesto, toast the almonds, put it with the bread, saute veggies, put it with the bread, add arugula, then sear and serve the salmon with the bread salad.  The meal was meant for 2 plates, and could have easily made 3-4.  We ate it at one serving and it was too much!  But it was so good that we couldn’t stop eating.

[Note from Brandy – I believe that the salmon was a Chef’s Table meal, so probably $18 per plate. Also, this made me the best house guest ever!]

As a whole the Plated box was very delicious.  My only suggestion would be to have nutritional information besides the calorie count, because I cannot calculate my Weight Watchers Points easily.  Food was in just-the-right proportions.  I LOVE recipes that have pictures with them and these recipes have more than 1 picture.  That helps to know how the food should look as you’re preparing it.  When we opened the box we didn’t realize there were 2 dinners in it.  It didn’t look like enough food for 2 when you start bringing it out of the box but once prepared it serves more than 2 or two extremely hearty eaters.
