August 2015 Conscious Premium Box Review

Conscious Box is “a monthly box of lavish beauty items, stylish sustainable home goods and delicious healthy snacks.” In the past it had been a sampling subscription and last month they debuted the Premium box for $40 a month. They have now changed it to $20 per month and calling it the “plus” box. And they also brought back the sampling subscription as the Taster Box for $9.95 per month.

They advertised the box with photos like this.

I opened the box and was curious to see what the big value item was…

And there wasn’t. 

Onto the next Adventure EcoPaper Journal ($12.98) This is an unlined journal made with tree-free paper.

Bob’s Red Mill Yellow Popcorn (50¢) While I love popcorn, I expected full size items in this box, as demonstrated from the photos, not popcorn.

Bonta d’Italia Gluten Free Penne (75¢) [description from a regular Love With Food box – my opinion holds!]  I honestly cannot fathom why a non-gluten free subscriber would be interested in GF pasta. Although it gets excellent reviews as a GF pasta, it’s still a GF pasta. We’re passing this one on to our celiac neighbor (she’s 10 and loves all the things we send her way!).

Mighty Leaf Teas x3 ($1.32) Organic Earl Grey, Hojicha Green Tea, Spring Jasmine.

Snapfit Fiber Crystals ($7.50 $5) This is a pricey product but that’s the retail price.  “SnapFit fiber crystals are made with 15 natural plant and vegetable fibers designed to keep you feeling full for up to 4 hours. Subtle fruit flavor is infused with a touch of natural sweetness to make this fiber drink delicious and easy to drink.” You could instead add benefiber to your favorite beverage but it’s not gluten-free. [Only 2, not 3]

Desert Essence Natural Neem Toothpaste – Sample

Derma-e Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask ($3.45)

South of France French Milled Shea Butter Bar Soap ($1) I like these soaps, so that was nice.

Thayers Original Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera ($7.96) non drying, alcohol free, and suitable for sensitive skin.

I paid $40 for this and the total retail value was $33. For a box like this the value should have exceeded the purchase price by around 25%.  I cancelled immediately and left them a note that it was appalling and they should issue all subscribers $20 refunds that paid $40 for this box.  (Even more appalling – my subscription price still said $40 – it was not changed!). Obviously for $20 it would have been a nice box – and clearly they understood that the box that they were putting together couldn’t possibly be worthy of a $40 price tag.  I cannot say that the next month’s box would be equivalent in value.  I’m staying away!
